Chapter 1
Unedited ~

Wednesday, November 14, 1984

I ran down the hallway, cheeks burning red as I chased down Tommy H through the halls of Hawkins high school.
Kids stop to stare and even laugh at my chaotic state, but I simply had no choice as this douchebag has taken my history essay threatening to rip it. To him, this was a joke, or maybe payback for last week when I told on him for cheating off me during a test.

Whatever it was, he was determined to make a fool out of me. We were halfway down the parking lot when he came to a quick halt in front of a very blue Camaro.
With his sudden termination, I almost came crashing towards carol and her barbie friends.

Panting, I put my hands on my hips, almost slouching over. "Give.Me.My.Essay." I said, gasping for air loudly as I heard laughter coming out from a very annoying blond.

"You made this bitch run across the school?" He asks Tommy, who responds with great spirit.

"Nice." still trying to catch my breath, I see him push off his car before towering over me.

"You want your paperback, baby?" he says, to which I cringe.

"One- don't call me baby. Two, yes." I finally stand up straight, being able to breathe.

"What are you willing to do for it, baby?" I roll my eyes at his obnoxious behavior.

"Nothing because you're going to hand it back like a nice person." a sly smile tug on his lips as he takes a drag of his cigarette.

"Nah, never been a "nice" person. I need something in return for my generosity." he blew the smoke over my head.

I looked down at my wristwatch and noticed with only two minutes left before; I needed to be in class fighting with this loser isn't worth it.

"What do you want?" I crossed my arms." he looked at me with one of those looks that make you feel violated.

He bent down to meet my height before whispering, "you."
Without even thinking, I did something that would define me for the rest of my high school life, it wasn't entirely on purpose, or maybe it was my subconscious making me do what I always have desired to.

It happened so quickly no one saw it coming. The loud gasp from the Barbie's and the wannabe Steve Harringtons was frightening.

"You." the words left his lips without any form of hesitation.
And just like his words, the palm of my hands came crashing on his cheeks, his head whipped to the side, and my hands slapped over my mouth as the sound of my hand and his cheeks colliding silenced the entire parking lot.

I quickly took this moment of shook to my advantage by rushing over to grab my essay from Tommy, who promptly gave it up.

I ran back into the building, knowing well that my moments of bravery had passed and the wrath of the school's most popular boy was headed straight for me, the school's nobody.

I just slapped Billy Hargrove.

I paced in my bedroom nervously as the thought of what happened came crashing down on me. Billy Hargrove wasn't the most understanding person on the planet, and if I told him it was an accident, there is no way he would believe me.

"Kai, calm down. He isn't going to kill you." Nancy said, she sat on the edge of my bed with Johnathan Byers.

"You didn't see it, Nanc. It was pretty brutal," Johnathan said, holding his laughter back.

"I'm glad; I'm so happy that my fear is humorous to you, John," I said and crossed my arms.

'You will be fine." - yeah, and besides, Nancy and I will protect you."
