Chapter 13
Unedited
"Hey, your back early." My mom's voice rang out the quiet house. They were playing cards and even drinking some fancy drinks.
"Not early enough," Dad mumbled under his breath; Mom shot him a glare.
"Yeah, he had a family emergency," I said, taking off my heels, regretting my decision to wear them in the first place.
"Is he the one that dropped you off just now?" Dad asked, looking at the huge leather jacket that hugged my body.  I nervously shifted.
"No, that was my friend Billy," I said, trying to leave to go upstairs. Mostly because my eyes were swollen, and if I stayed any longer, I would be a crying mess.
"Sweetheart, did Steve leave you there?" Mom asked, leaving her game strolling over quickly towards me.
"No, mom his uh grandma was taken to the um hospital, and he needed to go there; he wanted me to go with him so he could drop me off, but I didn't want to slow him down." the lie slipped out my tongue so effortlessly I felt guilty. I quickly looked away, trying not to meet my mom's eyes.
"That makes no sense," Dad said, dropping his card harshly on the table and standing up.
"Dad, I would do the same if I was him," I said, rolling my eyes.
"But you're a woman, and no one treats my baby girl like that,"  Dad said, and mom was rubbing my back like I was some broken girl. Maybe I was.
"Guys, I decided to stay, so forget about it, okay." I quickly ran up the stairs before my parents could interrogate me further.
I laid on my bed, looking up at the ceiling just a few more months until I can blow this place. I turned over, thinking about the beautiful sandy beach and the bright blue ocean. And luminous yellow sun.
Billy and I have been planning more about our California trip, nothing official but talking about something other than this wretched town felt better.

Sunday morning, I felt trapped in the dress I fell asleep in after crying my eyes out.
I put on a pair of baby blue leggings and a black sports bar before heading out the door before my parents could get a chance to talk to me.
I knew I probably looked terrible from the night I just had, and lying to my parents, especially after last year's incidents in the upside-down, still keeps me up at night with guilt.
My parents went through the same pain and suffering as Barbara's parents, but in the end, only I came back, and my best friend stayed behind.
I was forced to make up an elaborate story about Russians fed to me by the army just a couple of months back to Barbs' heartbroken parents, and I couldn't help but feel like a hypocrite for surviving. And even though it's been almost two years and both Will and I are safe, a part of me is afraid that if the monsters from my dream return, either me or someone I love will be taken as the next host.
The thought gets shaken from my head as I pass the Hargrove residence on my route; the sound of rock music could be heard from the sidewalk.
Shoot, I should have grabbed his jacket as well. I walk up to his driveway and take notice that neither Neils nor his step moms car is in the driveway.
I rang the bell, but the sound of music quickly drowned it out.
"Max!" Billy's voice could be heard over the music.
"MAXINE, GET THE DOOR!" I rolled my eyes at his laziness. He groaned before turning off the music and coming to open the door.
When he opened the door, the frown on his face changed, no he wasn't smiling; he was smirking.
