Chapter 28
Unedited

All my life, I have been told that prom was going to be the single most amazing night of my entire high school career; it was going to be the highlight of my youth and the best thing that was going to ever happen to me because it only happens once in your entire life and that I should cherish it because it will never come back. But right now, as I stand here on the side of the road at one A.M in my beautiful pink puffy prom dress, holding a gun in my hand, not sure whether or not I will make it out alive, I can wholeheartedly say all that stuff about prom is complete bullshit.

5 hours before:

"Nancy, hurry up, the limo is here," I yelled from the bottom of the Wheeler's staircase; it was eight pm, and the limo dad rented to take us to prom was just on time. "In a minute." Nancy could be heard scuffling upstairs, and Mike rolled his eyes, to which I flicked him. "This will be you in a couple of years," I said, and his face scrunched. I looked at the other annoyed child in the room, who was pulling on his pink tie. "Billy, would you stop? It's going to come undone." I said, slapping his hand away from his neck. "it's too tight; I feel like I am choking." Billy said, twisting his neck in irritation. "I am choking," Johnathan mumbled, holding the beautiful green corsage that perfectly matched Nancy's dress. "Honey, do you want me to come up?" Karen called as the time was now 8:03. "No, mom, give me a minute. Karen gave us a sympathetic smile, a way of saying sorry for her daughter running late.

"Maybe Kai should go check on her." My mom suggested nudging me, "but it took me forever to get down with this dress- okay fine." I said, hitching my dress up and making my way up the staircase. "Hey Nancy, prom was your idea, and so was leaving the house exactly at eight, and it's 8:05 now." I said, glancing at the clock in the hallway as I made my way to her messy room, "I can officially say we are late.." The words trailed off as I found my best friend laid flat out on the ground. "don't laugh." Nancy said, but it was too late for that because I immediately burst into a roar of laughter. "what the hell happened?!" Nancy began to whine and groan, trying to get herself off the ground. "Nancy, what happened!" I began to pull her up by her hands, but she seemed to be 10 pounds heavier. "it's this stupid beautiful dress; it weighs like ow! A ton."

I let go of her hand and stared at my best friend, who was disappearing in green. "I told you to get the blue silk dress instead, but nooo," I walked behind her, put my arms under her armpits, and began to pull her up "puffy dresses are in kai; it's all the rage now." I made my best Nancy impression as I tried to lift her. "Girl, what is this dress made of stones?" I began to look through the hundreds of layers. "I can't believe we are late. This is the worst thing ever." Nancy hid her face in her hands. "Oh, come on, it's okay to be fashionably late, remember." I tried to lift her again, only to tumble back onto the bed. "Maybe you should try pulling from the front again," Nancy suggested.

I was not the most athletic person or the most muscular; okay, fine, I'm not athletic or strong, but I've seen Billy weight train enough times to know if you're going to lift something heavy, you need to plant your feet and have a strong base. "okay on three alright." I took a deep breath and wiggled my toes firmly, planting my feet on Nancy's fluffy white rug. "Okay, one, two, three-" With a thump, I landed straight on her "son of bitch!" I cursed as Nancy groaned in pain. "Kai, are you okay?!" Bily's voice echoed from the end of the hall. Nancy's head snapped at me, and she frantically shook her head, embarrassed at her current state "tell him to leave." "Billy, don't co-," but it was too late because he had already busted into the room.

"Uh, what's going on here?" Billy cleared his throat as I slowly pushed myself off Nancy. "just hanging." I said, squeezing my eye shut from the blow to my stomach. "Not gonna lie, that was hot." "oh god." Nancy hid her face again. And I threw a magazine at him, which he quickly caught "you're such a pig, Hargrove. Now can you help me up?" I extended my arm. "Can someone tell me why you two are taking so long? No offense, Kai, but your mom is taking pictures of me, your dad is giving me threatening looks, and the poor Byers boy looks like he might puke."
