Project Survival

Chapter 3

Sidney argued with me for what seemed like forever. He was stubborn and pigheaded and head over hills in love with me. He said that he couldn’t let me go on my own because he would never be able to forgive himself if anything happened to me.

“Where are we going to find all the ingredients anyway?” he asked, still trying to talk me out of going.

“I don’t know, I was thinking about going back to the lab. They should still have some of the ingredients there and almost everybody that worked there is dead so it shouldn’t be too difficult to get in and out,” I answered.

“You're probably right but I don’t want you going anywhere near that place,” Sidney said in a pained voice.

The shaking as well as his fever was getting worse by the minute. I didn’t have any more time to argue with him if I wanted to save his life. I walked over to where our bags were lying and emptied the contents of mine into the backpack. I grabbed a bottle of water, Sidney’s file and the last two tranquilizer darts and threw it in my bag. I took some food and water out of the backpack and walked back over to Sidney. I sat down beside him and pulled him into my arms. He moaned from the pain and I let go of him immediately feeling bad that I had hurt him.

“I’m going now, I know you don’t want me to but I have too. Please just stay here and try to eat and drink something,” I begged before kissing him gently on his forehead and getting to my feet. I could tell that he wasn’t happy about me going by the expression on his face, so instead of looking at him and causing myself to feel guilty about doing this against his will I turned around and started walking away.

“I love you,” I heard him whisper as I reached the barn’s door. My heart skipped and I smiled to myself as I turned around to face him.

“I love you too and I promise I’ll be back soon,” I replied. He smiled at me and then I left. Seeing him in so much pain was breaking my heart. I just couldn’t take it and that’s why I had to go find the drugs he needed, even if it meant going back to the lab.

It took us about two days to get to the barn so I had no doubt that this was going to be a long journey. I had no plan, no money and only two tranquilizer darts left. I had no idea how I was going to pull this off but I knew I had to.

I sneaked off of the farm not wanting to be seen and then started making my way back down the long road. It was warm outside and I could feel my body dehydrating with every step I took. I only took one bottle of water and I didn’t want to drink it all up at once. The sun was just starting to set when I heard the sound of a motor in the distance. I looked behind me and saw a truck coming on slowly.

I wasn’t sure if I should be happy about it or if I should panic so I just kept on walking staring out in front of me. As the truck neared me I could feel my body starting to get tense. I just couldn’t get myself to trust anybody at the moment. What if they worked for my dad and were searching for me and Sidney. I ducked my head some more, letting my hair fall forward to hide my face. The truck passed by me with a roar but then I heard it braking. My head snapped up and I watched as it pulled to the side of the road right in front of me.

I pushed my hand into my bag and gripped one of the tranquilizer darts between my fingers. If this guy was really working for my dad there would be no point in running, he would already have contacted somebody. My only hope was to get the truck from him. I walked up to his door and looked inside. It was an old man with grey hair and a big beard. His clothes looked dirty and he smelled like dirt and animals. This would have disgusted me before but at the moment I just felt relieved.

“Can I give you a ride miss?” the old man asked smiling at me.

“Yes please” I replied, feeling grateful that I could rest for a while. I walked around the truck and got in the passenger seat. I knew I was taking a risk by getting in the truck with him but the sooner I got to the lab, the better. Sidney’s life was in my hands and I needed to do whatever I could to save him. I kept my hand on the tranquilizer dart as the old man pulled away. I didn’t think he worked for my dad but like I said, I really didn’t trust anybody at the moment.

He asked me where I was going and finally it seemed like something was going my way. It turned out that he was going straight to the town where the lab was. He had some deliveries he had to do there and expected to make it there by tomorrow morning since he was planning on driving right through the night.

After he finished telling me about his wife and kids he turned on the radio and we drove in silence. I let my body relax but kept my hand on the dart, just in case. We reached the town at around five am and he dropped me off at a gas station. I kept my head low and hid behind my hair as I made my way into the alley behind the garage. I was tired, hungry and sore from sitting in the truck the whole night but I was also happy. I had cut my time to get to the lab by an entire day which meant one day less of suffering for Sidney.

The lab was only a few blocks away so I quickly ran down the alley and into one of the back streets. It was still dark outside but the sun would be coming up soon and I had to get into the lab before it did. I kept to the shadows like Sidney had shown me and hoped that luck would stay on my side. When I reached the park opposite the lab I hid behind a big tree and scanned the area. I couldn’t see anybody so I made my way over to the fence that surrounded the lab. It was barricaded off with tape all around the building. At first I didn’t bother reading what the tape said because I was way too confused but then I stopped and read it.

NO ENTRY. PROPERTY OF THE US GOVERNMENT. TRESPASSERS WILL BE PUNISHED BY LAW.

My heart leaped in my chest as the words sunk in. Property of the US Government. Did that mean that the Government was funding the lab? Did this mean that the Government knew about the experiments my dad was doing?

Every possibility of what could be going on flashed through my head but there was only one thing I was sure of. Sidney and I were in a lot more trouble than I had thought.
