If I can't have you nobody can

Chapter 9

Once Jeremy was gone Sidney moved closer to me again.

"I can't do it. I won't do it!" I whisper yelled as I sat down in front of him.

"You have to Kaiden. You heard him, you don't have any other option," Sidney said looking straight at me. It was really dark but I could make out the expression on his face. He was terrified, I'm just not sure if he was scared about what they were going to do to me if I refused to work with them or if he was afraid of what they were going to do to him next.

"I won't go without you," I said stubbornly sticking my hand through the cage and gripping his hand in mine. I felt his hand stiffen and then relax in mine, I guess I took him by surprise. I'm not sure why I did it but then again I wasn't sure of much anymore.

"If you won't do it for yourself then do it for me," Sidney said confusing me.

"What do you mean?" I asked.

"I couldn't stand to watch them hurt you," he answered staring into my eyes and I couldn't get myself to look away.

If I was clever and appreciated my life at all I would accept my dad's offer but deep down I knew I wouldn't be able to do it, there had to be another way.

We sat like that for the rest of the night, not one of us saying anything. We had said all there was to say and now it was up to me to make my decision. Sidney held my hand tightly in his and for some reason having this contact with him made me feel a little bit better.

The next morning came and not one of us had slept. I felt tired but more then that I felt terrified of what the day held in store for me. I had no idea what the time was when a scary looking man entered the room. He had on a long white lab coat and an evil smile on his face. A shiver of fear ran through my body as he walked over to my cage. Sidney let go of my hand and moved to the back of his cage sitting with his back to us again.

"Hello little girl," the man said and I have to admit that I have never been this afraid in my entire life. He looked like a mad scientist or something and I could only imagine the things he would do to me if I didn't agree to work for them.

I didn't answer him. I crawled to the back of my cage and pressed my head into my hands wishing that this was all just a very bad dream. I heard the locks on my cage's door being opened and I heard him stepping into my cage but I couldn't get myself to look up at him.

"Come on, let's go. Your father wants to speak with you," the man said as he grabbed a hold of my arm and literally dragged me out of the cage. I heard a loud growling sound coming from behind me and then I heard the shaking of a cage again. I knew what had happened, I didn't have to look. Sidney was having one of his anger attacks and it was because they were hurting me.

The man dragged me through the caged room and into the big lab area where people were hard at work.

"Take care of number five please," he said to an old lady who looked like she stepped right out of a witch's kitchen. She agreed willingly and I felt my heart sink in my chest, I had this strange feeling that Sidney was subject number five. The man pulled me up onto my feet and then pulled me into a very big office. When we broke into the place a few days ago we didn't even see the door that led to this office. The door looked like a part of the wall and if you didn't know it was there you would never find it in a million years.

"Sit down and keep quiet," the man said pointing to a chair. I did as I was told and sat down wondering what I was going to do. About five minutes had passed when the door opened and my dad came walking in. He walked to the back of the desk and sat down looking at the scary man.

"Did she give you any trouble Clark?" my dad asked talking to him like I wasn't even in the room.

"No, none at all," he replied smiling wickedly at me.

"Good," my dad said and then focused his attention on me.
