If I can't have you nobody can
Chapter 16
I left Sydney there in his cage and headed off into the lab trying to figure out how I was going to get my escape plan to work. I didn’t really have a lot of time to think about it and as the day was slowly progressing I started getting more and more nervous. I was busy helping Jeremy with his computer programming the whole morning. It was difficult being around him and pretending that I actually liked him but I needed him to think things were good between us for my plan to work.
It was late afternoon when Graham called me away from Jeremy. I didn’t want to go over to him knowing that he was probably going to make me do something awful. I considered ignoring him but eventually got up and walked over to him. He led me to a row of metal drawers and unlocked one labeled as Black Sunshine. I remembered the name being on one of the files that Jeremy was working with and wondered who I was going to have to inject as Graham took out a vile of blue liquid.
He led me over to the room with all the cages, gave me a pair of gloves and told me to transfer the liquid to a syringe he handed me. I did as I was told hating every second but knowing I didn’t have a choice.
“Since you seemed so comfortable with him this morning I figured you can have the pleasure of giving him his injection,” Graham said pointing over to Sydney’s cage with an evil grin on his face. My heart sank in my chest as I realized what he wanted me to do and the syringe fell from my hand as I froze in place.
“What’s wrong? Scared his going to rip your head off?” Graham asked chuckling, he was finding the whole situation very amusing but there was nothing funny about it. He wanted me to drug Sydney, inject him with some sort of experimental drug. I couldn’t do it, I wouldn’t do it. I would rather be locked up in the cage next to his then hurt him like that.
Graham picked up the syringe and forced it back into my hand.
“I can’t do it,” I said looking up at him with pleading eyes.
“Of course you can and you are going to whether you want to or not so I suggest you get to it,” Graham said pushing me in the direction of Sydney’s cage.
Sydney was just sitting there on the floor watching us, he didn’t say or do anything. He didn’t even look worried about the fact that he was going to be injected with whatever the blue stuff in the syringe was. I came to a stand in front of his cage and then looked at Graham as he backed away from the cage. He took his tranquilizer gun that was hanging over his shoulder and pointed it at the cage when he reached the wall at the opposite end of the room.
“I need the keys,” I said loudly. He didn’t look happy about it but tossed the keys to me. I unlocked the cage quickly and stepped inside.
“Hi,” I said as my lips turned up into a sad smile. I was happy that I could be with Sydney but I wasn’t happy about why I was there. I wasn’t planning on injecting him but I had no idea what I was going to do.
“Hi, I see his sending you to do his dirty work now,” Sydney replied smiling back at me.
“I can’t do it, I won’t do it,” I whispered back as I moved onto my knees so that I was sitting in front of him.
“You have too,” Sydney replied like it wasn’t a big deal.
“No I don’t, they can’t make me do it, I won’t do it,” I stated stubbornly.
“Come on Kaiden, just do it. Graham is starting to get nervous,” he said looking over my shoulder.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” I whispered as some silent tears ran down my cheek.
“You have to do it, please. I promise I’ll be ok,” he pleaded which seemed very strange to me. Why would he want me to drug him? It didn’t make any sense to me but the look in his eyes convinced me to do it.
“Where?” I asked lifting the syringe.
“My arm is fine,” he answered rolling up his sleeve and holding his arms out for me. I didn’t want to do it but I did. I pressed the point of the needle into one of his veins and injected him with the blue liquid. As soon as the syringe was empty his face started contorting in pain as his body started to shake.
“Get out,” he said his hands bulging up in fists from what I could only imagine to be agonizing pain.
“No, I’m not going anywhere,” I said stubbornly placing my hand on his arm. His body was freezing cold and shivering under my touch.
“Please just go, I’ll be fine,” he pleaded and one again I did as he said. I’ve never been good at listening to people but for some reason I trusted him. If he said he would be ok then I knew he would.
I got to my feet and reluctantly left his cage. I considered leaving it unlocked but Graham was watching me carefully so I locked it and walked over to him. He took the keys from me and instructed me to go help Jeremy. It was almost time to go home and Jeremy had to finish his project by tomorrow. That is why he wasn’t at school today. My stomach flipped with nerves as I wiped away my tears and made my way back over to Jeremy.
