If I can’t have you nobody can

Chapter 22

I handed it to him but he just shook his head and pushed it away.

“Don’t you want to know what they did to you?” I asked surprised by his actions.

“You look and tell me what it says,” he replied staring straight ahead. I opened the file and watched as he clenched his fists together.

“Ok, let’s see,” I said as I started scanning through the first page. I could feel myself getting angry as I read the words.

“According to this your mother was a drug addict. Graham drove past her one day while she was sitting on the sidewalk holding a baby. She begged him for money when he pulled up next to her. He had just come from the bank and had ten thousand dollars with him so he offered it to her in exchange for the baby. She agreed and happily handed you over to him before she ran off”, I said feeling awful for him. What kind of mother sells her baby to a man she doesn’t know for ten thousand dollars?

I felt sad and angry and all kinds of emotions that I didn’t even recognized. I looked over to Sidney to see his reaction and was shocked by how calm he appeared. He was still looking straight ahead with no expression on his face.

There was a pocket in the folder containing some photo’s so I took them out and looked through them. There was a photo for each year of his life. The last one dated a few months ago.

“They’ve got some photos of you, do you want to see?” I asked holding them out to him. He shook his head without saying anything so I placed them back in the folder and continued looking through the file.

“Do you know how old you are?” I asked as I searched for the information we were really looking for.

“No,” he replied looking at me for the first time since I started going through his file. He had a hint of curiosity in his eyes.

“Twenty eight,” I said smiling at him.

“Twenty eight,” he repeated looking deep in thought.

“What are you thinking?” I asked before I could stop myself.

“How old are you?” he asked nervously.

“Seventeen,” I replied watching him carefully to see his reaction.

“Your eleven years younger than me,” he stated as he turned his head and continued staring straight ahead.

“Age is just a number,” I replied wondering why it would bother him that I was so much younger than him.

He didn’t say anything further so I continued looking through the file. There were a lot of pages filled with the names of the drugs they have given him and what they contained. I didn’t understand any of it so I skipped through it until I came to a page that had the words Project Black Sunshine written in bold letters at the top. I knew I had found what I was looking for and took a deep breath to calm my nerves before reading it.

My heart started racing in my chest as I read the words that explained what they have done to him and why. I was freaking out by the end so when I was done I shut the file and stuffed it back into my bag. I could hear my heavy breathing so I had no doubt that Sidney could hear it too.

“What does it say?” he asked placing his hand on my shoulder and squeezing it in a comforting way. He looked calm, I had no idea how he managed it under the circumstances.

“They’ve been giving you all types of experimental drugs since the day they got you. They wanted to create the ultimate weapon, a human that could fly, that could smell like an animal and run faster than a car. A human that could get shot without dying and that would obey their orders. They couldn’t do it with the animals because no matter how hard they tried animals could never have the knowledge of a human brain. They wanted to use you to get rid of anybody who got in their way. The drugs were working perfectly, the problem was that they couldn’t control you,” I said feeling a shiver run down my spine. This was horrible, I couldn’t understand how they could do this to him.

“According to the file you only needed ten more injections for the experiment to be complete,” I stated gripping his hand that was still on my shoulder.
