If I can’t have you nobody can

Chapter 17

“How did it go?” Jeremy asked looking concerned.

“Ok, I guess,” I replied not fooled by him so easily. He might be concerned about me but I knew he didn’t care about Sidney at all.

“Did you give him his injection?” He questioned curiously.

“Yip,” I answered not really feeling like discussing it.

“Did he freak out?” Jeremy asked getting irritated next to me.

“Nope,” I answered grabbing one of the files. I started inserting the information like he showed me the day before and he didn’t bother asking any more questions.

When it was time for the other workers to go home they started packing up their stuff but Jeremy just stayed where he was and continued to work.

“Aren’t you going home?” I asked hoping that he would say no and make my life a bit easier. I was planning on begging him if we could work late, I knew he wouldn’t fall for the fact that I wanted to work but I was planning on convincing him that I wanted some alone time with him.

“No, I have to finish inputting all of these files. I can’t take off another day from school,” he answered without looking at me.

“Can I stay and help you?” I asked hoping that he would agree.

“Why would you want to do that? You hate working here,” he stated looking away from his computer and focusing his eyes on me.

“I just want to be with you… alone,” I replied feeling disgusted at my own words.  I didn’t want anything to do with Jeremy now that I knew who he really was but I had to use his feelings for me to get out of here. It is the only thing I had playing in my favor.

His lips turned up into a smile and I knew he had fallen for my lie.

“That’s the best thing I’ve ever heard you say,” Jeremy said grinning at me and causing bile to rise up in my throat.

“Come on Kaiden, we’re going,” I heard my dad say from behind me. I jumped in my chair at the sound of his voice and had to remind myself to stay calm and friendly for my plan to work.

“I was hoping I could stay here with Jeremy, he still has lots to do before tomorrow and I offered to help him,” I said turning around in my chair and smiling up at my dad. He thought about my request for a minute and then focused his attention on Jeremy.

“Can I trust her with you?” he questioned but I could tell that he had already made up his mind.

“Yes sir,” Jeremy answered respectfully.

“Ok then, but I don’t want any funny business. Your guards will be waiting outside of the door. They will bring you home when you are ready,” my dad stated looking over at me before turning around and leaving.

I knew my dad wouldn’t leave me alone at the lab without my guards so I made sure to look where Graham left his tranquilizer gun, I had a feeling it was going to come in very handy.

At around eight everybody had left and Jeremy and I had only a few more files to go. With every file done I could feel myself getting more and more nervous but I tried staying calm, I couldn’t let Jeremy see how stressed I really was. I didn’t want him to think that I was up to something.

When Jeremy was busy inputting the last file’s information I go up pretending to be thirsty.

“Would you like something to drink?” I asked as friendly as I could.

“Yes please,” Jeremy replied smiling at me and then returning his eyes to the computer screen. I made my way over the fridge that was built into the wall close the Graham’s desk. Jeremy wasn’t paying attention to me so I quickly pulled open the drawer where I saw him hide some of the tranquilizer darts. I would have to stab Jeremy with it. The tranquilizer gun was locked away in one of the steel cupboards and I didn’t have time to get it right now.

I just opened the fridge when I heard Jeremy’s voice.

“What’s taking you so long?” He asked getting up and walking over to me.

“I don’t know what I want,” I stated pretending to look at the assortment of sodas.

“I know what I want,” Jeremy said and when I looked up he was closer than I expected.

“Oh, and what might that be?” I questioned playing along, this was my chance and I had to take it no matter how scared I was.

“You,” Jeremy replied moving closer. I forced a smile onto my face and he took this as approval. He placed his hands on my hips and pulled me closer. My body was reacting to his touch but not in the way he would have wanted.

The touch of his hands on me sent fear and disgust through me but instead of pulling away a threw my arms around his neck. He leaned forward and as his lips touched mine I pressed the tranquilizer dart into his neck. His body went limp instantly and I had to grab a hold of him so that he didn’t fall over. I laid him down on the ground being careful not to make too much noise and ran over to the cupboard where all the keys were kept.
