Project Survival

Chapter 9

I only allowed myself a few seconds to calm down and think of a plan. The problem is that I couldn’t come up with one. I was stuck in the room and my only option was to make a run for it. I pushed myself back to my feet, opened the door slowly and peeked outside. The exit wasn’t too far away from me but it was on the opposite side of the hospital from where I had parked the car.

I took a deep breath as I waited for the right moment to make my move. One of the doctors said something causing two nurses to leave the room and the rest of them to look at the patient. I knew this was probably going to be my best and only chance so I sneaked out of the room and slowly started making my way across the bigger room where all the doctors and nurses were.

I made it about half way to the exit when one of them spotted me. I didn’t have to be a genius to know what his next move was going to be. His eyes went wide with shock and anger as he started screaming and pointing at me. I didn’t wait to see what was going to happen. I took off running as fast as I could. There was no way I was getting caught now.

I reached the emergency entrance quickly and started running towards the edge of the parking lot. There were a few cars but not enough to hide me. I could still hear screaming from inside the hospital and I could hear the sound of far away footsteps. I knew it was somebody chasing me so I didn’t stop running. I ran around the hospital, going as fast as humanly possible.

When I reached the parking lot at the front of the hospital I dared a quick glance over my shoulder. There was about four or five men chasing me. Luckily I was much faster than them and had managed to put a good distance between us. I heard some more yelling and then a loud noise coming from the front entrance of the hospital. I looked in that direction but kept on running towards the car. I had to get to Sidney.

The big security guard that I saw earlier was charging at me full speed and from what I could tell he looked much faster than the other men chasing me. I sprinted the last few steps to the car, unlocked the door and jumped in just in time. I quickly locked the door from the inside as the guard reached the car. He grabbed a hold of the door handle and started pulling at it.

I was freaking out and battling to breath but somehow I managed to get the key in the ignition. It took a few turns to start and as it did a loud noise crashed in my ears. I didn’t have to look to know that the guard had broken my window. I could feel it from the little splinters of glass that burst apart and settled into the side of my face.

It hurt like hell but I managed to keep my head. I threw the car into reverse and pressed my foot down on the petrol as hard as I could. The car jerked but then sped backwards, I nearly hit a tree on the pavement but managed to throw the car back into gear and took off as fast as I could.

As I sped out of the parking lot I could see a bunch of people standing at the entrance staring at me in shock. I took the first off ramp that I saw and got onto the highway. I had no idea where I was going but I knew I had to get as far away from that hospital as possible. I drove down the highway at a ridiculous speed and was just about to slow down when I heard the sound of sirens in the distance.

There were a few other cars on the road but I had no doubt that it was me they were chasing. I just wasn’t sure if it was because I was speeding or because the hospital had reported me. It didn’t matter though, the reason was unimportant. The only thing that mattered was getting away from them, now more than ever. If they caught me earlier at the hospital they would have thought I am a junkie looking for a fix but if they caught me with Sidney they would surely take him away from me and then he would die. I couldn’t let that happen so instead of slowing down like I was planning on I pushed my foot down on the petrol as hard as I could.

I watched as the speedometer lifted until it couldn’t any more. I had no idea how fast I was going but it felt and looked like I was flying past the other cars and scenery next to the road. I checked my rear view mirror and saw that the cop cars were further behind me then before but there lights were still flickering and their sirens were still going crazy letting me know that the chase was far from over.
