Project Survival

Chapter 10

I kept on going straight ahead, driving down the freeway like a maniac. The cops were still following me but they weren’t catching up. Whatever car it is I stole back at the farm is really fast and I felt grateful that I decided on it instead of the old truck. I never would have been able to get away with that thing.

As I passed an on ramp from another freeway I spotted two black cars with flashing blue and red lights on the roof. They climbed onto the freeway with a hell of a speed and I felt my body stiffen as I watched them close in on me.

I had no idea how I was going to get away from them or what I was going to do next until the exact moment I decided. There was a freeway running in the opposite direction right next to the road I was on, the only thing separating the two roads were a few feet of pavement. I turned the staring wheel and did a three hundred and sixty degree turn without slowing down. The car bumped and slid as it went over the pavement but I managed to stay in control and as soon as I was on the freeway going the other direction I threw the car back into gear and sped off.

There were cars coming as I did this and I missed one of them with mere inches. It braked and skidded to a stop. The cop car that was closest to me followed me by making a speeding turn as well but he wasn’t as lucky as me and drove right into the car that I nearly hit before. There was a loud thud as the metal of the two cars came into contact but I didn’t stop to see if anybody was hurt.

If the circumstances were different I might have but the only thing I could think about at the moment was getting as far away from the cops as possible and finding a safe place for me and Sidney to hide.

The other cop car was still following me but he was far behind me now and I had a feeling that he had lost me since this side of the freeway was a lot busier. I slowed down a bit, not wanting to attract any unwanted attention to myself. At the next off ramp I left the highway and watched as the cop car passed in search of me.

I blew out a deep breath as my body filled with relief. Luck has really been on my side tonight and I couldn’t quite believe that I had managed to get all of the necessary drugs without being caught.

The road I had taken was quite busy so I drove as fast as the speed limit allowed, looking for somewhere we could hide. It took a while and I had to drive through an entire town but I eventually found a dark quiet road. I turned the car onto it and drove into what looked like the industrial part of the town. On the outskirts I found and abandoned building. It was surrounded with no entry signs but that didn’t stop me, in fact it gave me a bit of hope. I needed a place where we won’t be disturbed and this seemed perfect.

I pulled the car in behind the building, parking it between a big wall and a tree. I doubted that anybody would see it there so I quickly turned it off, grabbed the gun I had hidden under the seat and jumped out. I locked the car and quickly made my way around the building, looking for a way to get inside. The front and the back door were locked but I found a window not too far from the car and kicked it in. The glass splintered and crashed to the floor. The sound was loud in the quite of the morning and I could only hope that there was nobody close enough to hear.

Once I had secured our entry I went back to the car to fetch Sidney. He was breathing heavily and his skin was ice cold but he was still alive and there was no way I was giving up on him. He is really heavy so I had to drag him to the window. I battled lifting him up and through the window but I eventually managed to do it without hurting him.

I had no idea what kind of building it was so I took a quick look around and then pulled him into a little room that was down the hallway from where we had entered. It looked like some sort of storeroom. There were shelves lining the walls and stacked up boxes at the back.

I took a few of the boxes and threw their content out on the floor, not bothering to look what was inside. It was really dark and I probably wouldn’t have been able to see anyway. I unfolded the boxes and put them on the cold floor. Next I moved Sidney onto them and then quickly ran back to the car to get our bags.

Once I was sure I had everything, I locked the car and went back inside. I sat down next to Sidney and pulled his file out of my bag. I opened it but couldn’t make out any of the writing so I searched through my bag for the torch I stolen at the first house we slept at. It was a bit dim but gave enough light for me to read.

I searched through the file until I found the page where it described what drugs they had given Sidney. At the bottom of the page there was a recipe of sorts stating the quantities needed for each dose and how they were to be mixed. I read through it quickly and then started to unpack everything I needed.

It sounded really complicated and since I didn’t have any measuring equipment I was really nervous. What if I mixed it wrongly and something happened to Sidney? I would never be able to live with myself. I didn’t have a choice though, if Sidney didn’t get the drugs soon he was going to die anyway so I took a deep breath, sat up straight and took a hold of one of the empty glass vials.
