Project Survival

Chapter 13

I woke to the sound of crickets and birds. My first thought was about how nice and peaceful it sounded, my second was, where the hell am I? I sat up straight as panic shot through my body. I quickly scanned my surrounds and found Sidney sitting not too far away from me, pressed up against a tree. I sighed with relief but still had no idea where we were.  It was obvious that we were in some sort of forest, I could figure that out from our surroundings, but I had no idea how we got here.

“How did we get here and where is the car?” I asked as Sidney crawled over to me.

“You were fast asleep and I didn’t want to wake you so I parked the car at the edge of the forest and carried you here,” he replied, hugging me tightly against him

“Did you hide it?’ I asked, worried that somebody might see it.

“Of course, I don’t think anybody would find it but figured it would be safer for us to hide somewhere away from it anyway, just in case they somehow do manage to track us,” Sidney replied as he gently kissed me on my head.

“And our stuff?” I questioned, as I remembered that I was going to have to give him another injection soon.

“Right here,” he answered, tapping the ground beside me and causing me to blush. How did I miss it?

We ate shared an energy bar for breakfast and washed it down with some water. It wasn’t the ideal breakfast, or in this case lunch but it was better than nothing.

“How are you feeling?” I asked, hoping that my mixture was correct and that it wasn’t affecting him in anyway.

“I feel good actually,’ he replied as he pushed himself to his feet.

“Good, so now what do we do?” I questioned as he held his hands out to me.

“We get going, the further we get away from them, the better,” he answered as he pulled me to my feet.

We quickly collected our stuff and then went on our way.  We spent the rest of the day on the road but at around nine that night I started feeling really sick. My stomach was spinning and if we didn’t stop next to the road I would have vomited all over the car.

“What’s wrong?” Sidney asked, kneeling down beside me,

“I don’t know,” I replied as I started hurling all over again. It was disgusting, it tasted like crap and it had a strange bluish color to it. I was feeling way too bad to click what was going on but it didn’t take Sidney long to figure it out.

“You're sick because of me,” he stated, moving slightly away from me

“What… what do you mean?” I managed to ask while trying to gather myself. I must look like crap.

“Somehow my drugs are affecting you,” he answered with a pained look on his face.

“But how? I questioned, still not really getting it.

“It must be from making love, it must have somehow transferred from me into your blood stream. I’m so sorry,” he answered with the saddest look on his face.

“It’s not your fault, you didn’t know this would happen,” I replied the seriousness of the situation setting in on me.

“I don’t know what to do,” Sidney stated, sounding completely overwhelmed

“We are going to continue on and see what happens, that is all we can do,” I answered, sounding a lot braver then I felt.

Before we left I quickly rinsed my mouth with some water and then got into the car. I could tell that Sidney was still really upset but he didn’t argue with me when I told him to start driving.

We took off down the road with no destination in mind. The only thing we were sure about is that we had to keep on moving until we figured out a way to get rid of these people who were following us. I wasn’t sure that it was possible though, they were bound to catch up to us sometime and I had no idea what was going to happen when they do. In fact, I wasn’t even sure if I was going to make it through the night. My stomach was cramping badly and my skin had turned ice cold over the last few minutes.

“Are they still following us?” I managed to ask, knowing that now wouldn’t be the best time for them to find us.

“Yeah, but they’re not getting any closer, a least not for the moment,” Sidney answered, looking over at me worriedly.

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry about me,” I said to him, smiling weakly.  We both knew I was lying but I couldn’t just give up. I was still hoping that somehow Sidney and I will have our happy ending.
