"Wish I was going with you ..." Kylie pouted, watching Jack pack an overnight bag in the bedroom. Jack just smirked and said it was better if she stayed home.
"Trust me, if you reckon Marty's a flirt, you'll hate these guys –"
"– I don't think he's a flirt. I think he's a slut – and why, you are these guys? How do you fit into this group?"
"You're starting to sound jealous, Wombat." Jack teased, glancing over his shoulder at her with a playful smirk.
"Only because they get to spend time with you this weekend and not me ..." Kylie pouted again and hugged him from behind while he packed the bag. She heard Jack chuckle and prise her arms off him so he could turn around to sit on the bed. Kylie stood between his legs and rested her hands on his shoulders while he held her waist.
"You know you're cute when you're jealous?" Jack said, that teasing smirk still lighting up his face.
"Again with the jealous ... are you planning on having sex with these blokes? Is that what I'm jealous for?" Kylie teased. Her face lit up when Jack howled with wolfish laughter.
"Think it's safe to say that won't be happening. Look, it's Chaz's stag do and I haven't seen the fellas for the best part of the last decade ... besides, they're not the sort of blokes you'd want to be seen dead with, even drunk."
"So I ask again, how'd you fit into this group?"
"We all met in school. Grew up in Campbelltown together ... remember when I told you about Nate?" Jack asked, watching Kylie nod.
"Well, there was a group of us. Chaz Kaufusi, Reece Henderson – Hendo – Nate Fanning, Farouk Aziz – Wog and me. Just your typical young fellas. When the shit hit the fan over Cassie, Nate thought I was trying to hook up with someone else at the same time ... I wasn't, Chaz wanted to ask this sheila out and ... and well, last week Chaz told me he had with Nate and cleared it all up. I mean, I tried to talk to him but he was pretty pissed with me ... think we're ok now though. I mean, we're all gonna be there. ... yeah, it's been a while and it'll be pretty good to see them all again –"
"– as great as it is that you got your spat sorted and everything but ... I still wish I was going with you ..." Kylie tugged lightly on the collar of his shirt and pouting at him, added "Kookaburra ..."
It was the first weekend they would spend apart since getting together and it sitting painfully at the front of Kylie's mind. Jack was well aware of this too and as much as he would love to either pass on his oldest friends just so he could give Kylie the ride of her life or bring her with him so he could say g'day to his mates in between exquisite tortures, convinced himself that the reward of a sexless weekend away would be ... well, a sexy week in.
Jack was taking the train from Wangarra to Sydney tonight and back again Sunday morning. Chaz, an Islander raised in Sydney's inner suburbs was getting married and by all accounts, it was a truly rare occasion for this group of friends. When Jack had told Kylie about the wedding, the shock in his voice and on his face had only made her wonder what exactly Jack was like before they met. Surely, he didn't get to be so great by just being flirtatious?
Not only would Jack be away this weekend for the stag do, but he and Kylie would be driving up on the Friday night to stay with Tommo and Paula before going to the Sunday morning beach wedding and then drive home in time for work on Monday.
So, standing in the doorway, Jack kissed Kylie as hard as he could, sucking on her tongue, tugging on her bottom lip until they parted.
"I'll be home before you know it, babe." Jack muttered in her ear. She closed her eyes, to memorise the feel of his stubble against her skin, the smell of his aftershave. She knew she was being foolish, it would only be two nights that he'd be gone – but it was the first two nights that they had been apart.
