Kate knocked on the door of the library, catching Kylie completely by surprise.
"Jesus! Oh Kate ... you nearly gave me a heart attack!"
Kate smirked at her and said, "well, points for nearly, I guess. You're wanted on the phone."
Grinning, Kylie shook her head and followed Kate to the front office, leaving her paperwork scattered across two tables behind her.
"Cheers – who?" Kylie asked Kate, walking down the corridor to the office.
"Matt Collins."
"Ooh, good! He got my email! I was hoping he'd get back to me as quickly as possible!"
"Oh yeah?" Kate asked, mocking Kylie with raised eyebrows and a wicked smirk.
"For god's sake, woman!" Kylie laughed at her, turning into the office near the kitchen, where Jack was rinsing his coffee mug, looking up at the sound of Kylie's laughter.
"I never said a word!" Kate teased, also laughing.
"Like you need to – you've always had your mind in the gutter!" Kylie laughed back at her.
Kate shrugged and said, "well it has been a while for you – I'm just saying –"
"– and guess what I'm just saying," Kylie teased with a dark, teasing look at Kate, who just cackled and turned to Jack.
"What d'ya reckon, flirty shirt? Reckon Kylz needs to –"
"– ah, thank you!" Kylie cackled loudly at Kate, swatting her arm as she continued on into the office to reclaim the near forgotten receiver.
"Matt – Kylie Foley. How're you going?"
"G'day – yeah good. I got your email this morning."
"Oh great! So what do you think?"
"Yeah, sounds good. But I thought you weren't due to step down till August?"
"Well, it was more of a verbal agreement between me and Lynne – it was just that nobody offered to take up the position even when we advertised internally. People don't fancy working in rural areas, despite the money you get. Anyways, everything is all sorted for you to move in first thing next term. That way you get the holidays to get yourself sorted and whatever else. Plus, with reports next term, I don't think I'd survive!"
"Alright then ... well, I guess it's a done deal then."
"Excellent! Well, in that case – allow me to welcome you to Murruma Public School!" Kylie said, grinning so hard it made her cheeks hurt. She and Matt swapped more details until she hung up the phone and slouched happily in Kate's chair, running her fingers through her hair.
Feeling the gentle buzz of her phone, she pulled it out, swinging lazily in the ergonomic chair, to find a message from Sophie in their group chat, but Kate called out to her before she could reply to Soph.
Kylie dragged herself to her feet and swanned back into the kitchen, still grinning and found Kate and Jack chatting.
They watched Kylie eagerly as she drifted into the kitchen, stopping beside Jack, resting her hip against the benchtop.
"So?" Kate urged impatiently.
Kylie looked so contented and happy, grinning at them both, it prompted further teasing from Kate.
"I don't see a smoke in your hand, so –"
"– oh shut up!" Kylie laughed at Kate.
"Well, what do you expect me to think? You've been so high strung the last few weeks, I swear – did you two sleep together and like, not call each other or something? There's been ... something going on, I'm sure –"
