Hi,

After we introducing ourselves usually we have a lot of things to talk about to get to know each other better. One of the topics is talking about hobbies or things that we are interested in.

For example we're gonna ask if people
like to read or not. In Bahasa Indonesia we will asking people about their hobbies usually with : Kamu suka baca nggak? and literally it means Do you like reading or not?

FYI the question tag 'nggak' means 'not'. I'll tell you later how to make a negative sentence.

As i know in English, people said Do you like reading? without the 'or not' in the end of sentence. But if you translated it to Bahasa Indonesia, it will be Apakah kamu suka membaca? and the sentence will be turn into a formal way, which we are barely use it.

If you go to translate the language, you can write Apakah kamu suka membaca? better than Kamu suka baca nggak? Using the informal way to the translate apps will make the meaning a little bit different.

But if you want to speak informal way, you just need to remove the 'Apakah' and add the negative term 'Nggak' in the end of sentece. It will be Kamu suka membaca nggak? the vibes will automatically change to the informal way. You can also say it 'Membaca' or 'Baca' either.

Membaca = Reading
Baca = Read

In this down bellow i have some vocabularies of hobbies.

Menari = Dancing
Menyanyi = Singing
Olah raga = Sport
Menggambar = Drawing
Mendengarkan lagu = Listen to music
Lagu = Song
Musik = Music
Buku = Book
Kesenian / Seni = Art
Menonton = Watching
Film = Movie
Menulis = Write
Mengkoleksi = Collecting
Apa hobimu? = What's your hobby?
Hobiku adalah ... = My hobby is ...

Okay, now go to the conversation. In daily we didn't say Hobiku adalah ... usually we remove the 'Adalah' in English it refers to the 'Is' but it's fine to remove it in Bahasa Indonesia. Just go straight to say it Hobiku ...

Also! we can say it with just Aku hobi ... the meaning are still same which is My hobby is ...

Aother one! We also give an answer with Aku suka ... which means I like ...

The same case for the interrogative sentence. Apa hobimu? can be write as Hobi kamu apa? and Kamu hobi apa? the meaning are not change!

Lastly, for the formal way, again, you just need to change Aku to Saya. Now let me show you the example for the daily conversations.

Tifa : Hey Alaska, hobi kamu apa?
Alaska : Ah... aku hobi menggambar, aku suka menggambar. Kamu?
Tifa : Aku suka menonton film.

Now try to translate the conversation by yourself. I hope you learn something! Semangat :)
