Stefan and I were crammed uncomfortably in the back of Marcel's car as he drove us to the coven house. It was weird being this close to a stranger, but I felt a little better knowing that we were both basically heading into our deaths. It was a weird bonding moment.
"So how did you get mixed up in all of this?" Stefan cleared his throat, breaking the awkward silence. "You seem like a nice girl."
"I fell in love," I said simply. "I'd do anything for Elijah. And as much as I hate to admit it, I don't think I could live without Klaus either."
"Yeah he has a way of growing on you," he agreed with a sigh.
"Why are you here?" I glanced up at him.
Stefan smiled, "You know, I'm not really sure. Klaus helped me out of a tough spot so I guess I'm just returning the favor. I'd also rather not die if I can help it."
"Come on, who are you really here for?" I asked and turned so I was facing him.
"My girlfriend," he admitted. "And my brother. Basically all of my friends back home. They're all part of Klaus's sire line, too. I'm doing this for them."
"I guess we all have our reasons," I sighed as I heard the car come to a stop. Stefan and I held our breaths as we heard a couple of the Strix members surround the car. A few seconds later, the gate creaked open and we started moving, both of us sighing in relief that we had gotten through the first obstacle.
We rode for another few minutes before Marcel got out and sent me a text that he'd let us know when the coast was clear. Almost ten minutes passed when my phone rang with a text, letting us know that it was time. I glanced over at Stefan, "You ready?"
"Hey, listen, I know we don't really know each other but my life is sort of in your hands so let's make this count," Stefan told me.
I smiled at him, "No pressure."
Stefan began to scratch off the paste on his wound so Rayna could find us as I opened the trunk, stretching out my legs. "Be careful when Rayna gets here. She'll kill anything in her way," he told me as we began walking towards the large coven house.
"Thanks, you too," I nodded and quietly pushed open the door.
"If you're ever in Mystic Falls, come find me for a drink. I think you and my brother would get along," he said before disappearing into the dark hallway. A few seconds later, I heard the sounds of fighting coming from the front entrance. Rayna was here.
I took a deep breath and focused my hearing to find Klaus and Elijah. I picked up the voices of Davina and a few other witches chanting at the other end of the house and quickly ran towards them. As I passed by the stone walls, an eerie feeling settled over me like I had been here before. I didn't have any time to process it as I stormed into the room, jumping on the first Strix member I saw. I ripped his heart out before he could turn around and moved on to the next one, but Marcel beat me to it as he snapped his neck. I ran to stand in front of the pool of dark water to see Klaus and Elijah floating unconscious with their throats slit.
"Marcel!" Davina yelled once she realized we were here.
"I'm sorry, D," Marcel shook his head and looked at me. "We need to get them out of that water now."
We both took a step forward before the witches suddenly used their magic to throw us back against the wall. We crashed into a glass table and I winced as I felt glass shards digging into my back. When I stood up again, Elijah was suddenly awake and had grabbed a witch, sinking his teeth into her neck. I took the opportunity to run forward and bit into one of the witches beside Davina before throwing her behind us. In the meantime, Elijah had killed another witch and Marcel was going for Davina.
"Davina, stop!" Marcel shouted at her. Davina quickly got to her feet, continuing her spell, as Klaus awoke from his sleep and charged towards her. Davina lifted him in the air, bringing him to her as he roared in frustration.
"You've had your time!" She shoved him back in the pool as the lights behind us exploded and the three of us were knocked to the ground. It suddenly felt like fire was making its way up my arm as I shouted in pain and looked down at the red discolored skin. Marcel was in the same state beside me as Elijah moved to my side, staring at us in confusion.
The pain continued to work its way up my body, feeling like every nerve ending had been set on fire. My vision became blurred as the pain became too much, but as soon as it had appeared it was gone. I groaned in relief and looked at my arms, seeing the redness was gone. It felt like a physical weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
Marcel got up to check on Davina as Elijah jumped back into the pool to help Klaus. I shakily got to my feet, standing above them as Klaus's eyes snapped open. "I felt them leave. My sire line is broken," he gasped. I stared down into the pool, a familiar feeling washing over me. An image flashed in my mind as I found myself in the same position as Klaus, waking up in the dark water.
"You guys should get out of here before whatever is left of the Strix shows up," Marcel told us, bringing me back into this reality.
I nodded and stepped into the murky water on the other side of Klaus, helping him up. Elijah looked at me with heavy eyes, "There's something I need to take care of."
"Go. I'll take him," I assured him. He quietly got out of the pool and disappeared from the room as I wrapped my arm around Klaus's waist to support him. I looked down at Marcel and Davina as we passed by, "Is she okay?" I asked him.
"She's fine. I'm gonna take her home," he answered, looking down at the teenage witch.
I helped Klaus out of the house and decided it would just be easier to carry him since he wasn't much help anyways. Thankfully, by the time we made it to the compound he seemed to be back to his normal self. I set him down on the couch in the study and went to get him a blood bag to get back some of his strength.
"Are you okay?" I asked as I sat down beside him.
"I feel like part of me died," he admitted as he finished off a bag. "The Strix got what they wanted. My entire sire line is gone."
"What about Aurora?" I wondered.
"I have a plan to make her suffer. She should be waking any moment buried in Marcel's garden," he answered with a grim smile.
I looked behind him to see the sun beginning to light up the morning sky. Klaus seemed to notice the same thing as he set the empty bag on the table and stood up. "I have to go see an old friend. I'll be back," he announced before leaving.
I retreated back into my room and sat on the edge of my bed, listening to the sounds of the city grow as everyone began to wake. I heard the floor creak in front of me and lifted my head to see Elijah standing in the doorway. His suit was still wet from earlier and there were tears in his dark eyes.
I stood up to embrace him, feeling his wet body press against my warm clothes. He rested his head on my shoulder as it felt like every wall he had ever built shattered before me. The two of us stood in silence, thankful that we both still had each other.
