Warm, morning light flooded into the room, causing me to open my eyes. Elijah was lying beside me, his handsome face looking like he was completely at peace. I wanted to go back to sleep, but I promised the wolves I'd find a way to help them and I couldn't do that if I stayed in bed with him, even if I really wanted to. I gently slid from beneath Elijah's arms and quickly got dressed before walking downstairs, trying not to wake him.

I was surprised to find a table in the courtyard filled with fruits, cheeses, and pastries. I picked up a grape and popped it into my mouth while looking at the other food that made my stomach rumble. I wonder which restaurant was missing their chef.

"Good morning," Klaus' voice entered the courtyard as he moved to stand beside me.

"So, what's the special occasion?" I asked him, motioning to the table full of food.

He shook his head, "Certainly a card I've played in the past, but I had no hand in this."

"Maybe it was Elijah," I suggested. This seemed more of his style anyway.

One cue, he descended down the stairs. "This wasn't my doing."

I slowly let the rest of the grapes I was holding fall and looked at them. "Then where did this all come from?" I asked uneasily. Hopefully, they were just playing a joke on me and I hadn't been eating random food that one of their enemies brought here.

A large dish with a cover on it started to rattle on the table. We all stared at each other in confusion before Klaus quickly snatched off the lid. I gasped in surprise as two birds fluttered out and flew away, leaving behind a small note. Klaus picked it up, and his face started to become annoyed as he read it.

"What is it?" Elijah asked him.

"An invitation from our mother," he sighed.

I rolled my eyes, "You two have fun with that." I wanted no part of their mother. I didn't really know her, but I did know that she was the one who told the witches to kill the baby so I already didn't like her.

"I don't think you're going to be getting out of this one," Klaus shook his head. "It specifically asks for you. See, right here? Where it says Adelaide?" He waved the note at me.

"Give me that," I snatched it from him. Sure enough, it had my name in big black letters. "I don't get it. What does she want with me?" I asked them.

"Perhaps she just wants to meet the girl that her son is dating," Klaus shrugged.

"We both know that's not the reason," Elijah reminded him. "I'll send her your regards. You won't be attending tonight." He started walking away.

"Why not?" I demanded. It's not like I wanted to come, but I hated being told I couldn't.

"It's too dangerous. The only reason she wants you there is to torture me and Niklaus. You're her leverage," he explained, looking at his brother to agree.

"Don't you think if I don't come, I'll be put in even more danger?" I pointed out to them. "I get you guys are worried, but she wouldn't do anything if you two are there, right?"

"Possibly," Klaus shrugged.

Elijah shook his head, "I'm not giving her the chance. If I have to, I'll send you out of the city for the night. You're not coming to dinner." He said sternly and left the room. I stood there in silence, not even sure what to say.

I considered following him, but stopped when Klaus put his hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry about it. He has a lot on his plate." He smiled. "Can't say I don't agree with him though. My mother can be very mischievous."
