Chris led Ash and I to the cabin, his usual upbeat and happy expression was gone. He seemed numb, sad, guilty.

Deciding it would be best to comfort him, I take his hand in mine, giving it a soft squeeze.

He felt worse than I did, considering we had just lost our best friend, and he blamed himself. I wish he didn't, one of us had to die. No one can make that decision confidently.

If he meant to choose you:

The memory flashed in my mind, him moving the lever slightly so it was pointing at my picture. I almost forgot he had chosen me.

He was scared and panicked. Don't blame him for that. Part of me wanted to believe the thought that echoed in my head. The other part of me wasn't sure if that was entirely true. The part of me that thought he and Josh never liked me, just felt pity. This would have been an easy way to get rid of me.

"The watch. It was the watch that made me change my mind. I couldn't lose my..." he trailed off.

Ashley stayed close to us, walking just a few feet behind. "what do we do? Josh was the glue holding our group together." I choked back a sob. "We are separated, vulnerable."

The picture of Josh's body hanging limply on the wall plagued my thoughts. My clothes cold from his blood. I could have tried harder to get out, maybe even saved him.

It didn't feel real. Then again nothing at the moment did. I could barely feel the cold snow on my blood covered arms. My skin burned slightly as the numbness set in.

Chris pulled away from my touch and took off his sweater, revealing a denim over shirt and a white t shirt underneath. "Here, you'll freeze before we make it back."

"I'm fine."

"You are wearing a tank top that is covered in blood. You need this more than I do." I sighed, knowing he wouldn't let me not take it.

I pulled it over my head, relaxing a bit when my arms began to heat up "Thanks."

Ashley mumbled something behind us, Chris glanced at her in confusion. "The cabin!"

"Yeah what about it?"

"Sam is alone at the cabin." We all shared a look, picking up our speed to a jog.

"This way! We can get there faster." Chris hopped off a small ledge, turning to help us down. Ashley sat on the edge, he took her hand as she slid down.

I placed my hand on the snowy edge, swinging my legs over and jumping down. "Shit!"

My foot twisted as I hit the ground. Chris caught me before I fell but the damage was already done. "Ah I think I rolled my ankle."

"The cabins right there, let's get inside and we can wrap it." Chris helped me to the door, quickly pushing it open and locking it behind us. "Ash you go see if Sam is upstairs, get Y/n a jacket too. I'm gonna clean her up a bit."

He led me into the downstairs bathroom, sitting me down on the edge of the tub and grabbing a rag from the counter. He took my hand in his, trying his best to clean the blood. After failing at this, he mumbled some inaudible words and stood again.

"I swear they had a first aid kit down here, where did it go?" He opened the last cabinet. "I guess, I guess we could cut the sleeve off of something to wrap your foot. I know... I know Josh has a few jackets in his room."

"Guys, Sam isn't upstairs!" Ashley ran into the bathroom, tossing a sweatshirt at me. I didn't recognize it, definitely wasn't mine. She must have found it on her way back.

"Shit! Ok we have to go after her right?" Chris asks, "ok obviously we do. Ash go get one of Josh's jackets from his room."

"No I'm not leaving again. The maniac could be here!"

I looked down at the sweatshirt in my arms, "who's is this?"

"I don't know, it was on the chair in the living room. I didn't want to go searching for a jacket, guys I'm scared!"

The tag inside the shirt led me to believe it was Emily's. A women's 'Ralph Lauren' sweatshirt, and Emily, maybe Jess, were the only ones here who would have that. "We don't need one of his," I took my knife from the pocket in my sweatpants and flipped it open. "Sorry Em."

"Y/n what are you doing you need that!"

"How often will we be outside Chris?"

"Maybe Sam is outside and we need to go out there to find her." He made a good argument, but my mind was already made up.

"Then I go to that one room in the basement. That place seemed safe enough. I lock the doors and wait for you to come back." I tore the sleeve from the shirt and wrapped the soft fabric around my ankle. "See, all better."

I stood, trying to hide the wince that flew through my body as the pain set in. "Yeah... better." He replied sarcastically.

"Guys! Focus Sam could be killed if we don't hurry!" Ashley pleaded with us to focus on the matter at hand. "Stop fighting like an old married couple and let's go."

"We don't fight like a married couple!" Chris defended.

"No, we fight like an old married couple. Get it right Christopher." I joked, he rolled his eyes and took the lead.

We walked for a few seconds, drowning in the silence. It was eerie, dark, every creak in the wood would make Ash and I jump.

The igniting of a candle made Ashley squeal, she grabbed onto my arm and I tried to act brave. "What was that?!" Her voice shook with the familiar sound of terror.

"What was what?" Chris looked around and stepped closer to us.

"The candle! It lit on its own! Chris what is happening?"

"You're imagining things Ash, the candles don't light on their own." He turned to continue walking but stopped dead in his tracks when the next words left her mouth.

"I think it was.. a ghost."

Chris gave her an annoyed look, "Ashley ghosts aren't real! Now come on, we need to find Sam."

"Y/n! Tell him what we saw. He'll listen to you!"

"Uh yeah... there's a reasonable explanation. Candles don't just light on their own and Chris is right, ghosts aren't real."

Ashley face fell, she had assumed I would take her side on this, but the truth of the matter was, I didn't know what happened. My eyes must be tricking me. This isn't real. Wake up y/n.
