John's POV

Wellston Private High School, Ms. Elliott's Class, 1:10PM

"...Say, who is you? Whar is you? Dog my cats ef I didn't hear sumf'n." A female student with straight blonde hair and teal eyes had stood up from her chair, reading off of her book. "Well, I know what I's gwyne to do: I's gwyne to set down here and listen tell I hears it ag'in."

The girl sat back in her seat after reading one full page of The Adventures of Huckleberry Fynn.

My English teacher, Ms. Elliott, clapped her hands together and smiled brightly. "Excellent pronunciation, Minerva! Now, let's continue on, shall we? Hmm, how about..."

Her green eyes scanned the room for another person to read the following paragraphs since there was no one who willingly wanted to read out loud to the class. Some students stared straight at the teacher, probably hoping that she would notice that they were paying attention, and others who looked away from her gaze. And guess what? I was the latter.

"Hmm, how about...?" She repeated to herself.

Don't pick me. Don't pick me. Don't pick me. Don't pick-

"John!"

FUCK.

"Uh, okay..." I said as I slowly stood up from my seat, picking up my copy of the book as well.

Shit. Which page were we on again?

Urgh, this is exactly why I prefer reading alone. That way, you know for a fact that you can't make a fool of yourself in public.

"Um, sorry. Which page are we on again?" I asked nervously.

"That's no problem! We're on page 7. Starting with, 'So he set down...'" The teacher told me.

"Oh, okay." I found the paragraph starting with those words.

I am so glad that Ms. Elliott is nothing like Mr. Travis. If I said something like that to him, he would probably continue to stare me into shame.

As I was about to read the paragraph, the school loudspeaker suddenly turned on.

"John. Please report to the main office immediately." I heard.

Once the loudspeaker shut off, many murmurs and whispers erupted from the students.

"Hmm, the king seems to be called to the office quite often..."

"Well yeah. You'd expect so, wouldn't you? He's still got his duties to deal with after all."

"Ooh, someone's in trouble~!"

"Dude, what are you? Five? No one does that anymore."

"Shut up and let me relive my glorious kindergarten days! I still refuse to believe that the school banned Cool Math Games on our chromebooks...!"

"Quiet down, everyone!" Ms. Elliott instructed. She then turned to me. "You may go, John. I'll send you an email regarding tonight's homework, alright?"

"Yes, Ms. Elliott. I'll be going now." I nodded, proceeding to head to the office right after.
