Seraphina's POV
Leilah's Laboratory, Lovun Town, 3:30PM
"Hey, Sera?" Leilah called from the other side of the room.
She was looking at many documents scribbled with information involving the current situation of her organization. Finally, after a good ten minutes, she sighed and set them down on the table.
"Yeah?" I replied, inspecting the broken fragment of a failed Spectre drug.
And thankfully, it wasn't anything that had to do with the ability disabler.
Leilah told me that she was working on a drug that was supposed to relieve the pain of an ability. Apparently, by her words, she had gotten reports specifying that the response of people's abilities activating had caused them aching and discomfort, which was strange.
Abilities were naturally etched inside our bodies at a young age. They were a part of who we were. There wasn't supposed to be any backlash with activating them, but there was.
"Hey, Sera." Leilah repeated.
"Mm? What is it?" I questioned, pulling my face away from the microscope.
"Do you remember our game of cards that we played when we were young?"
I turned my body around, moving the black rolling chair in the process.
"Of course I do." I nodded. "Whenever Mom and Dad were out for work or some other stuff, we would always play cards. It was one of the most comforting things I remember from that dreadful place. Though, we'd just stack them up and put the Queen card on top, watching them all fall down afterward. It wasn't very entertaining now that I look back. Why do you ask so suddenly?"
Leilah smiled to herself. "Mm. So, you also think that way. I'm the same as you, Sera. Just playing with you was the only way that I could take our previous 'home.' It made me feel safe."
"Leilah..." I uttered, astonished at her words.
I pursed my lips.
"Leilah, do you...ever miss them?" I plucked up the courage to ask my sister. "By 'them', I mean Mom and Dad. Do you ever feel like you want to see them again?"
There was dead silence.
"No." The lavender-haired woman responded coldly. "I never want to go back there. Never again. Other than you, Seraphina, I loved nothing else in that prison. Nothing at all."
I was shocked. I've never heard her like this before.
"What? Did you really like that sick excuse of a house?" I could feel something snap within her. "Mom and Dad may have had the money to buy a large amount of property, but treating us with a pretty mansion doesn't mean it was a pretty place. In fact, I found it quite disgusting."
I lowered my head, thinking about what Leilah said to me.
That's right.
She's right.
Mom and Dad did have a lot of wealth. And because of that, I've always taken things for granted. Because they had all the fortune, I always depended on them to pay for my expenses. My books, the private schools I went to when I was in middle and elementary school.
When have I ever bought something or made something for myself?
Gazing at my frowning face, Leilah's expression eased, and she put a hand to her forehead.
