John's POV

Wellston Private High School, Wellston Town, 5:19PM

"C-Claire?!" I shouted, feeling a cold sweat from the back of my neck.

"John...?" She responded and blinked, even rubbing her eyes and opening them again to check if it really was me. "I-I didn't realize-...I didn't know that...you would..."

"Hey, Claire!" A voice called out to the green-haired girl. It was also familiar. And male-sounding. "I hope I didn't miss too much! All we need to do is find another person, right-?"

The boy froze. I didn't even have to turn around to see him.

I just know that he did it.

"J-John...?" He uttered. "Is that...you...?"

I slowly turned my body to look at him.

And I knew.

I could never forget his voice.

I knew him since we were kids, after all.

"A-Adrion." I didn't mean to stutter, but I did. "So, you're also here...?"

"Uh, yeah." He replied, nervously scratching the back of his head. "I mean, New Bostin was one of the high schools that your headmaster invited to come here. I thought you would've known."

"What?" I was genuinely shocked.

Because that didn't make any sense.

Last week, the Royals and I were specifically given a paper. It was a list of schools that were arriving at Wellston for the masquerade party.

And if I remembered correctly...

I didn't find New Bostin there.

Could it have been a last-minute decision?

No, that couldn't have been it.

Headmaster Vaughn is a very calculative man. I'm sure that he's planned everything out and thought about the entire process multiple times. The idea of him being forgetful just seems odd.

Come to think of it, did the others know?

I told them about Claire and Adrion once, but I lied, saying that we weren't close at all.

"Two minutes are up!" Headmaster Vaughn suddenly declared, snapping me out of my thoughts. "Make sure to find your two teammates in the remaining minute!"

"Well, I suppose we'll just have to take you as our third teammate. Won't we, John?" Claire stated with a sigh. Then, she looked at Adrion. "That's fine with you, right, Adrion?"

"Oh. Yeah." He agreed, still a bit shaken up by my presence. "After all, I'm sure that his ability will help us, and it's been a while since we've been together, all three of us. So, um..."

There was an awkward moment of silence that followed.

Once again, Claire sighed.

"Hey, guys. I'll, uh...I'm gonna go take a drink at the water fountain, alright?" She laughed in a way that seemed forceful. "Can you tell me when the minute hits zero, Adrion?"

"Sure, go on ahead. I'll keep John company." The blond-haired teen nodded.

"Okay. Well...see you a bit!" She walked off in the direction of the exit.
