Chapter 68

We arrived at the hospital a half an hour later. The traffic had been pretty messy on the way over. Tom was a good driver, he really was, but he got really nervous about having Alicia in the car. She had been quiet the whole ride, but the expression her face said she was in much pain.

“Hello, what can I help you with?” the male receptionist asked when we reached the desk.

“We called from the car! We’re having a baby!” I said quickly.

A nurse was soon behind us with a wheelchair for Alicia. When we reached the room I helped Alicia on the bed and the nurse left us with the words that a midwife would be joining us any moment.

“How are you feeling?”

“Like I’m going to die!” Alicia exclaimed as she shut her eyes hard and let out a heavy sigh.

Tom was in the corridor with Vanessa, calling our mother and said it was time. I kissed Alicia on her forehead and went outside to him.

“Mom’s taking the first flight over here!” he said and put his phone into his pocket. I only nodded my head.

“Are you nervous?”

I still nodded my head.

“Go inside! We stay out here” Vanessa squeezed my arm before she ordered me to go inside again.
Shortly after I sat down on the edge of the bed the midwife came in.

“Oh, what do we have here!” she said and sat down on a chair at the end of the bed.  She did some test and then started the ultrasound machine. “It looks like it should! You are dilated three centimeters, and you need to be dialed ten before we can start! I’ll be back in an hour to see how much it is then” she said before turning around and left the room.

“I don’t like her!”

I looked over at Alicia who stared at the door.

“Why not?”

“She’s bitchy!”

“I didn’t think that…” I started before she interrupted me.

“Oh, but she’s not going to deliver the baby out of your vagina!” she snapped at me.

I didn’t really know what to say so I stayed quiet. Luckily – for me – my phone went off and I thanked God that phone call.

“Mama”

“My boy! I can’t believe this is happening!”

“Me neither, are you on your way over?”

“Yes! We are at the airport soon… Have you called her parents?”

“No… No, we haven’t…” I said quietly.

“Why not? They should know this!”

“Yeah but… she doesn’t want to”

My mother became quiet. I knew what she was thinking, but Alicia and I already had that talk. She didn’t want her family there when the baby was born. I had to accept and respect that.
We ended the call shortly after that, with my mother’s words that she hoped she would be there when the baby came.

“Baby…?” I said unsecure and sat down on the edge. I knew I would get shit for this. But I couldn’t hold it in me anymore. “Should we call your parents?”

“No” she answered shortly.

“Why not? They should be here when the baby arrives… They should be meeting their grandchild…”
