I 16 I

"Girls, what are you thinking of doing for your birthday next weekend?" Mom asks, as she deals with the heaping pile of dishes at the sink. She regards us with a mild expression of annoyance, as if hinting we should all wash our own dishes in this family. 

"Maybe a picnic? At the park?" I say, thinking on my feet. "We can invite our friends, get a cake, some macaroons...I don't know." 

Marinette squeals. "That sounds amazing." She bursts from her chair, toast in hand. "We'll have to invite Adrien--I mean, Adrien--I mean ALYA, and uh, N-Nino and Adrien and--" 

"Wow," I say, cocking my head to the side. "You name-dropped him three times in the same sentence. That's gotta be a record breaker." 

"Y/N," Mom says, slightly reprimanding. She looks at me with a cheeky expression. "You'll have to bring Chat Noir and, of course, Ladybug." She winks. "I saw the news piece on you and Chat Noir." 

"Mom!" I say. "Blasphemous." 

"And, you should invite your boyfriends to dinner tonight!" Mom suggests, clapping her hands together with excitement. 

What? Boyfriends, plural? I didn't know Marinette had a boyfriend. I thought Adrien was her one true forever love. 

"I'm sorry, did you just say that Marinette has a boyfriend, or are you having a stroke?" 

Marinette shakes her head rapidly, avoiding eye contact like the plague. "He's just a friend. Besides, you know I like--" 

I groan. "Please don't say his name again." 

"Adrien." She smiles with delusion. 

"Marinette, you just need to accept the fact that Adrien isn't interested in you," Mom says, plopping the last dish into the drainer. 

"Savage," I say, gawking. "But who's the other guy, though? The secret boyfriend?" I nudge her. "And I thought we didn't have secrets." 

Yeah, says me, the one dating a superhero with a super secret identity. Who happens to be her sidekick. 

"It's Luka," Marinette says, blushing. "He's not really my boyfriend though. He's just a--" 

"Please don't infect me with the 'he's just a friend' virus.  It's already infected half our school." I put my head in my hands. "I'd actually like to meet him, though." 

"Invite him to dinner," Mom repeats, directing her command to Marinette. She looks back at me. "And invite Chat Noir." 

"Mom, he's a superhero," I say, and cross my arms stubbornly. "He doesn't have time to come to dinner. What if someone gets Akumatized?" 

Mom waves my concern to the wind. "Ladybug can handle it. I'm sure she can deal with a little Akumatization. It's just for one night." 

Marinette scoffs. "Ladybug will not be taking care of Paris while Chat Noir's on a silly date." 

"What if Ladybug takes the night off too?" I suggest, smiling innocently. "Maybe she has a date as well." 

Marinette seems to give him. She shrugs. "Fine. I guess I could invite Luka to dinner tonight." 

"Yeah. Do it," I say. "I'll just call up Chat Noir --oh wait -- I don't have his phone number. Oops. I guess he can't come." 

Marinette rolls her eyes. "I'm sure you'll find a way. 

"I'll tell your father to start dinner as soon as he finishes with work down in the shop," Mom says, clapping her hands. "Oh, this is so exciting!" 

...

I corner Adrien after class, even though I know I'm going to regret my decision. Unfortunately, Chat Noir seems to know all and if I didn't invite him, he'd be pissed. 

"Sure, I'll meet your parents," Adrien says cheekily. "If you think we're ready for that stage." 

"No one ever likes that stage," I say offhandedly. "Shh, Kagami's watching." 

Down the hall, she passes us without looking. 

"She's not looking at us," Adrien says, but pulls me behind the pillar anyways. "Stop worrying so much." 

"You're coming as Chat Noir," I tell him. 

"I'm coming where as Chat Noir?" 

"To dinner," I say. "Is your dad going to let you out of the house?" 

Adrien shrugs. "I'll sneak out, like usual." 

"Marinette's bringing her boyfriend too." 

"I didn't know Marinette had a boyfriend." 

"Neither did I," I admit. "Apparently she's been seeing Luka Couffaine." 

"That's Juleka's older brother, isn't it?" 

I nod. "I don't even know if they're dating. It's just Mom's suspicion." I remember the underlying concern with this plan. "What if someone get's Akumatized? 

Adrien smirks. "Then I'll save you, darling."
