My science book is missing.
It's almost time for school, and at this rate, I'm going to be late again.
My clumsy and eternally forgetful twin must have borrowed it.
"Marinette!"
Silence.
"Marinette! I need my science book back!"
Still no answer.
I march across the hall and lift the small trapdoor to her room. It swings open with a creak, and I freeze at the sight before me.
I gasp. "Ladybug?"
The red-suited girl whirls around, eyes wide. "Oh—I—uh—?"
She seems surprised to see me. "What are you doing in Marinette's room? Is there something going on?"
"No!" she blurts out, scratching the back of her neck. "It's just—I, uh—Marinette needed me to—uh..."
I squint at her earrings. The last spot flickers weakly. "I think your earrings are about to—"
"Oh, shoot." Ladybug dives behind the bed just as a bright light flashes.
I step toward the door, playing it cool. "Do you want me to leave, or—?"
"Yep! That would be great!" Marinette's voice squeaks.
I turn, reaching for the handle, when something clunks against the back of my head.
I bend down and pick it up. "This is Marinette's lucky charm..." I glance back toward the bed. "Ladybug?"
A throat clears.
"Well..."
I squint at the charm, then at the spot behind the bed. "This isn't the first time something of Marinette's has turned up right after I've seen you." I pause, realization dawning. "Oh my god."
A deep sigh.
"Y/N... you can't tell anyone."
She stands, revealing my twin—and a tiny red bug-mouse floating beside her.
I squeal. "You're Ladybug!" I rush over and hug her. "I knew it!"
"You did?" Marinette stammers. "How?"
I cross my arms. "Come on, how could I not?"
She giggles. "Then why didn't you say anything?"
"To be honest, I wasn't a hundred percent sure until now," I say. "So... who's Cat Noir?"
"I don't know." she shrugs. "Our identities are secret, remember?"
I nudge her. "Supposed to be."
She rolls her eyes. "Whatever. Just promise not to tell anyone."
"Of course. Wouldn't want to put you—or Paris—in danger."
She eyes me warily. "Not even Adrien."
I snort. "Why would I tell him? I don't even like him." I point a finger at her. "You do, though."
Her face flushes crimson.
"You know," I muse, "I always thought you and Cat Noir would make a good match."
"Ew," Marinette groans. "Adrien's tons more legit than Cat Noir."
I glance at the clock. "We're late for school."
Marinette squeaks. "Crap! I was supposed to meet Alya at the library! And Adrien has fencing practice today—I need the perfect excuse to see him!"
I shake my head. "I don't know how you even made it through tenth grade."
"Eleventh isn't that hard," she complains.
"You still have to show up." I sigh. "Oh, and I need my science book."
"I didn't take it!"
I roll my eyes. "Let's just go."
At school, Alya greets us at the door, arms crossed. "Where the hell were you?"
"Held up with something," Marinette mutters. "Sorry, Alya."
Alya groans. "You missed first period. And Chloé tried to kiss Adrien."
Marinette's entire body goes rigid. "She WHAT? THAT LITTLE—"
"Hey, Y/N," Adrien smiles as he walks past. "Marinette."
Marinette's lips press into a thin line as Alya hisses, "Don't freak. She didn't manage it."
Marinette exhales a breath of relief.
"You really need to get over this," I say. "Or at least talk to him."
Adrien and Nino sit by the stairwell, chatting about some video game.
Alya shoves Marinette forward. "Go."
Marinette squeaks. "I—uh—"
A voice booms from above.
"ATTENTION!"
The sky rumbles as a girl in a yellow costume descends, gripping a massive lightning bolt-shaped pen.
"I AM LIGHTNING BOLT!"
A crackling bolt of energy shoots down towards the school yard. It lands on Chloe, incinerating her instantly. There's nothing but a scorch mark in the gravel.
Oh well, we won't miss her that much.
All around us, screams are erupting. Students scatter for cover as Lightning Bolt soars through the air, searching for the next victim.
"It's time for Ladybug," I whisper. "Go—I'll cover for you!"
Alya tugs my arm. "Take shelter!"
I try to follow, but a bolt slams into the pillar beside me, blocking the exit.
"Go!" I shout over my shoulder. "I'll be fine!"
Famous last words.
Lightning Bolt hovers above me, eyes locked on mine.
I brace myself, but the blast never comes.
"Well, this is certainly a catastrophe," a voice says.
I open my eyes a smidge, to see a pair of bright green eyes staring me down. As a blast of lighting shoots through the air, arms wrap around me, lifting me out of reach.
Cat Noir places me gently on the school roof and crosses his arms. He stares down at me with a cocky expression on his face. "Looks like I just saved your life."
"It does appear that way, doesn't it?" I look down at the chaos that rages below. "Thank you, Kitty." I borrow Marinette's nickname for him.
Cat Noir looks away, and I see the ghost of smirk on his face. He turns back to me and leans nonchalantly on his pole. "So, you doing anything after school?"
"Why you want to know?"
"That's for me to know," Cat Noir says, blowing on his claws.
"Don't you have a supervillain to defeat?"
"All in good time, Y/N. All in good time."
"You're definitely flirtier than Ladybug described," I tell him.
Cat's ear's perk up. "Ladybug talks about me? What did she say?"
I roll my eyes. "She might have mentioned you once or twice. I don't know."
"Wait," Cat Noir says, leaning closer. "Do you know who she is?"
"That's for me to know."
