“Nayeon,” blurted out Jeongyeon as she rushed into the practice room where she’d suspected Nayeon was. Unsurprisingly, she had been correct about the location-- evidently, she still was able to swiftly locate her ex-lover. However, she hadn’t stopped to consider why Nayeon had headed to the practice room in the first place. If she had, she may have stopped and waited to speak to Nayeon later and wouldn’t have ended up intruding upon Jihyo and Jimin’s practice as well.

A blush rose to Jeongyeon’s cheeks as the three women stared at her for a long pause after she’d burst into the room. Jimin looked seconds away from laughing, and Jihyo looked concerned and alarmed. Jeongyeon was afraid to look at Nayeon for more than a second and see her expression.

“So sorry for intruding,” apologized Jeongyeon, just barely able to keep from stammering. “I’ll leave you guys to continue.”

To Jeongyeon’s surprise, Jihyo spoke out before she could even turn around to leave. “Hey, wait,” she commanded in a worried tone. “Did anything happen?

Jeongyeon shook her head, feeling her face heat up more. “No, nothing pressing. Just a… personal thing I suppose.” Personal thing? Jeongyeon mentally scolded herself. You sound ridiculous.

“It’s alright,” Nayeon said curtly, her tone void of emotion and perfectly professional. “I was about to leave Jihyo and Jimin to continue practicing for Jihyo’s next stage.”

“Of course.” Jeongyeon nodded quickly in understanding.

Nayeon checked her watch and nodded. “I’ll talk to you in your office in five.”

Unsure what to say, Jeongyeon just smiled nervously, bowed, and exited the practice room in a rush.

As Jeongyeon made her way back to her office, her mind dwelled on the last time the two co-founders had spoken. It had been at Jeongyeon’s apartment, eating takeout pizza and watching a random movie that was on. It had been both horrible and wonderful to experience, Jeongyeon recalled. They had sat next to each other on the car ride with the radio on and made friendly small talk, something that relived Jeongyeon. At least Nayeon wasn’t angry with her, only distant. They’d sat with far too much space in between them on the couch, as though both of them were unwilling to acknowledge the fact that they’d once cuddled as close as physically possible. Few words were spoken during the movie, creating silences only interrupted by the crackle and music of the TV speakers. During the saddest part of the movie, Jeongyeon swore she saw Nayeon tearing up. But when she’d asked the older girl if she was okay, she’d quickly answered yes with no room for argument, and left hastily after the movie ended.

Before Jeongyeon could mentally pour over the other night again, a sharp knock on her office door interrupted her thoughts. “Come in,” she answered.

Nayeon entered the room quietly, seeming uncharacteristically uncertain. Jeongyeon gestured to the other office chair at the desk, and Nayeon politely took the seat. They used to sit at this desk for hours in the past, talking and planning and laughing. Jeongyeon took a deep breathe and closed her eyes to shake off the deja vu.

“What did you mean to tell me?” Nayeon asked, her words slow and careful. It was as if she too sensed that Jeongyeon was about to say something important.

“I wanted to formally apologize.”

“For breaking up? Those things happen, it’s fine.”

Jeongyeon didn’t answer for a long breath. “It’s not fine, love.” She tensed, swearing under her breath as Nayeon sharply inhaled. “I’m sorry, I slipped up--”

“It’s fine,” interrupted the older, nervously fidgeting with her long black hair. “ Just don’t call me that. What are you apologizing for?”

“I made a huge mistake by leaving for Japan. I missed you so bad, I forgot it was you I was missing and mistook it for you having a lack of affection. A trainee kept flirting with me, and I was convinced I was lonely enough it was okay to reciprocate. I couldn’t take the guilt and I broke up with you. You didn’t deserve my lack of faithfulness. I didn’t ever bond with the trainee. She came and spoke to me a few minutes ago and apologized. We never even went on a date. But I guess I convinced myself that the feeling of being wanted was what I needed. And I guess I’ve been realizing now that I was just making a fool out of myself by ever believing I didn’t need you.”

“You cheated on me?”

“Yeah. I flirted with her before I broke up with you. I’m owning up to that fully. And I’m asking you if you’d be willing to give me a second chance.”

Nayeon stared at Jeongyeon for the longest time. Jeongyeon’s heart was pounding so loud it echoed in her ears.

Nayeon exhaled shakily, her eyes watering up. “Why are you telling me now?”

“Because you deserve to know everything that made me do what I did. And you deserve to know that if I could, I’d take it all back in a heartbeat. I miss you, bunny.”

This time, Nayeon didn’t reject the pet name. “I miss you too,” she whispered. “But I don’t know if I can trust you yet.”

“I understand completely,” Jeongyeon responded with relief in her voice. She felt so euphoric to hear that Nayeon had missed their relationship like Jeongyeon had.

“All you did was flirt before you called and ended things with me?”

“Yeah,” Jeongyeon whispered, lowering her head in shame. “I was being so selfish, leaving you and using Momo to feel wanted.”

“Momo?” Nayeon gasped. “Our idol?”

“I think she was under the impression that we had already separated. And she is the one who told me to apologize and come clean. Don’t fault her for this.”

“I suspected there was another, but…” Nayeon trailed off.

Jeongyeon bowed her head in shame.

“Look, Jeongyeon. This hurts. But I understand. I know you’ve had issues with feeling wanted by me, and I know your love language being touch would have made the distance more confusing. I don’t forgive you yet, but I think I eventually might.”

Now Jeongyeon had tears in her eyes as well. “What does this mean for us?” she whispered.

“It means I’ll give you another chance with me.”
