Chapter 51

Escape

The academy guards escorted us back to the hall. As if they already knew that Jax was there... The ceremony was fast. A short prayer and messages were shared for the late headmistress.

I was still shocked by the news. Hindi ko alam ang tungkol doon. And now, I feel so sorry for Jax. Alam kong mahirap ito para sa kanya at alam kong sobra siyang nasasaktan hanggang ngayon.

And the fact that I wasn't there for him when it happened breaks my heart even more. Wala ako sa tabi niya. Hindi ko siya nadamayan.

I bought one balot of mamon to help him feel better. Papunta na ako sa room ni Jax para ibigay sana iyon pero agad akong napahinto nang makita si Claire na pumasok sa kwarto ni Jax.

Malalim akong huminga.

"Oo nga pala," I whispered to myself.

Tinago ko iyong mamon sa likod ko at pumasok na lang sa sariling kwarto. Of course, there's Claire to comfort him. How did I forget?

Hindi rin mawala sa isip ko iyong sinabi niya sa akin doon sa rooftop. Ano ang ibigsabihin niya roon?

The next day felt worst. Hindi maganda ang pakiramdam ko at parang nanghihina ako. My chest was throbbing really bad. Pinilit kong pumasok dahil i-didiscuss daw ngayon ang tungkol sa nalalapit na feasibility study namin. I can't miss it.

"You look pale, Cali. Okay ka lang?" tanong ni Chance. Napansin yata niya dahil magkatabi lang naman kami.

Dahan-dahan akong tumango sa kanya. I don't feel so well, but I need to be present in today's class.

Napansin din ata ni Prof. Somero dahil bigla siyang lumapit sa akin. "Are you okay, Cali? Do you need to go to the clinic?"

Hindi na ako makasagot. I immediately clutched on my chest because of the pain that I can't take anymore. My watch started to beep.

"Guys, pasamahan si Cali sa clinic, bilis!"

Kitang-kita ko ang agad na pagtayo ni Chance at Jax, pero si Grant ang unang nakalapit sa akin.

"Buhatin kita," ani Grant. I couldn't even respond to him anymore.

Mabilis siyang tumalikod sa akin at pumaluhod. Inalalayan naman ako ni Prof. Somero para makasampa sa likod ni Grant.

Everything happened so quick. I woke up and saw the nurse, the very same one who checks on me whenever I visit the hospital. Hindi ko alam kung kailan pa siya nandito, pero alam ko na agad na si Mommy ang may pakana nito kaya hindi na ako nag-react. I won't be surprise next time kung may sarili na akong bed dito sa infirmary.

"How are you feeling, Naiam?" Grant asked.

He sounded so worried, kaya naman natawa ako ng bahagya. "Worried ka?" pang-aasar ko kahit medyo nanghihina pa.

"Of course... Not."

I rolled my eyes. Of course! "Yeah right, you're only worried about the duck!" Tumango-tango pa ako sa kanya.

Grant looked at me seriously. "Please stop destroying what is left of your heart by constantly thinking about the things that hurt you."

Dahan-dahang umuwang ang bibig ko roon. Alam niya ba ang tungkol sa sakit ko? Paano? Kailan pa?

"Guard your heart above all else," Grant added.

"When did you know about my heart condition?" I asked him. Agad kong naalala iyong sa retreat kung saan tinulungan niya ako sa gamot ko. "Oh... Iyong sa medicine nga pala."
