Chapter Sixteen
December opened her eyes slowly allowing them to adjust to the brightness of the room. She was happy to see Daniel beside her sitting in the rocking chair just as he was when she fell asleep. Part of her was scared it was all a dream.
"Danny? Where did you leave the girls?" she asked suddenly realizing that he hadn't told her.
"With Mrs. Albertson your boss." He said fixing the pillows she laid on.
"Oh good" She said relieved then another question entered her mind "Where are we?"
Daniel smiled when he looked at her similar to the cocky grin he had when she first met him. Her heart felt like it over flowed with love for him as she looked into his dark blue eyes.
"It's an interesting story" he said as he walked towards the door "But I'll let Abilene tell you."
December was sure he jaw dropped Abilene the name that was in the letter left with her when she was found on the door step of the Ramsey orphanage the letter she had read so many times she memorized every single word.
Dear Ramsey Orphanage,
Please take great care of my December baby, she is perfect in every way. Her day of birth is December fourteenth 1856. As I write this it very much pains me to know I won't see her again. I wish I could be there to see her grow, to see her become the amazing woman I know she will be. Just know there is no greater love I have felt then the love for my little girl. I'd never do this if not to save her precious life as her father saved mine, there is no other way... All I can do is pray that she'll soon be in loving arms, in a family who loves her as much as she deserves, as much as I love her. I'll always hold a special place in my heart for my December Daughter, a place no other will ever feel a place that only belongs to her.
Sincerely
Abilene Knight
December was shocked when she saw her walk into the room. The first thing she noticed was her auburn colored hair then the second was her eyes. They were the same color of blue as one of her eyes.
Abilene smiled as tears welled up in her eyes. Daniel left to give them some privacy.
"Abilene Knight?" December asked as she looked at the woman she had tried to imagine her whole life.
Abilene nodded as the tears spilled over "You're absolutely beautiful" she said as she stepped closer to December.
December studied her closely she looked very similar in the face to her mother, although Abilene's skin was a nice cream color whereas December's skin was tan no matter what she did.
"Why did you leave me?" December asked the words she had wanted to know the answer to for so long.
"I didn't want to" Abilene said as she set down on the foot of the bed "I was forced to... when I had you I was very young, I met your father and ran away with him... Your father Runs with Buffalo died protecting us... my parents hired someone to find me and kill everyone who held us captive, well they hired men who lived outside the law, evil men who tried to have their way with me. Runs with Buffalo saved us from such evilness... but one managed to shoot him and drag me back to my parents... they moved me to Boston and I gave birth as soon as we got there. My father threatened to kill you he didn't approve of my marriage to Runs with Buffalo."
"Why didn't you run away with me?" December asked "Find some way to keep me?"
"I was scared they had found me once I thought it would happen again. And I couldn't stand the idea of anything bad happening to you."
