Chapter Six
~~
Daniel knocked on the door loudly waiting for one of the Farley's to answer.
"Mr. Wade? What brings you here today?" Mr. Farley said in a much too friendly voice as he opened the door and stepping onto the porch with Daniel.
"I think you know exactly why I'm here. My wife told me that you put up an ad for a new school teacher."
"Dan calm down all we-"
"Dammit Pete! You made us get married so she could keep the job as a school teacher."
"Now Daniel I never said that." at that Daniel clenched his fists. He wanted so badly to punch the man who stood in front of him.
"You know what Reverend I'm starting to think everything out of your mouth is a lie." He said through clinched teeth.
"Look, I'm just doing the best for the town... How does it look for the school teacher to be married to a Saloon owner? It's not my fault that you have all these debts Dan so don't blame me for everything, remember the man you use to be? A beloved doctor, maybe you shouldn't have commented those crimes-"
"You don't know a damn thing Pete! You're such a Hypocrite. Stay away from me and my wife and Rhiannon." Daniel said just having enough of the man who thought he knew everything. He didn't know anything though. No one knew the truth, the whole truth of how he went from being the town's doctor to being a saloon owner with three other jobs paying off debts that weren't his, being treated badly by people who were once his patients.
He wanted to leave this town, to move somewhere else and start over. But he couldn't until the debts where paid off. He went back to the saloon there wouldn't be very many people there on a Monday so he gave Paul the day off.
"Daniel?" He was surprised when he heard December call his name from the stairs. He couldn't help but smile he liked the way his name sounded when she said it.
"Ember-"
"Please don't call me that... did you talk to Mr. Farley?"
"Yeah... he's... he" Daniel wanted to call him a name but realizes everything that came to mind wasn't fitting to say in front of a lady "He said the same thing that his wife told you. I'm real sorry Ember. It's my fault he said it isn't fitting to have the saloon owners wife be the school teacher."
"I can't believe him!" December said with as much frustration as he felt "I never should have come here. Nothing has gone right... how am I going to take care of Rhiannon? And what about Jennie and Laura?"
"Who are Jennie and Laura?"
"I'm going to adopt them from home." December said sheepishly looking down at the ground.

December looked up at Daniel who had surprise written all over his face.
"You mean to tell me that we've only been married for three days and we are going to have three daughters?" he asked "Couldn't you have run this adoption by me?"
She glared at the man "No because I have planned this long before I met you." She said
"Ember..."
"Don't call me that! I'll do whatever I want, you may be my husband but you are not the boss of me!" she said stomping back to her apartment.
"December Wait" she heard him say running up behind her "Look I don't want to fight with you."
"Yeah well for someone who doesn't want to fight with me you're really good at it." December said narrowing her eyes at him and crossing her arms. She had no idea why Daniel could always get under her skin. It seemed half of the time she was mad at him and the other half she was telling herself not to like him. He really brought out the worst in her.
He stepped closer to her and grabbed her hand "I'm sorry." He said seriously looking her straight in the eyes. No man had ever done that before, usually her eyes seemed to scare people or make them disgusted but he looked at her like she was actually beautiful.
She blushed realizing they were standing this close in front of the saloon. She quickly looked away and stepped back, whishing her heart would stop racing, and her hand didn't still feel warm were he'd held it.
"T-that's alright...I need to get back to Rhiannon." She said walking away from him with, she could feel the heat rise to her cheeks. She didn't like the affect he had on her. She didn't like it not one bit.

Daniel woke up the sound of knocking on his door "Go away we're closed!" he yelled pulling his blanket closer to him. It couldn't be even six in the morning.
"Daniel it's me" He heard December say she knocked again "Daniel... I think you need to get out here now!" he noticed her voice seemed scared, vulnerable even. He quickly jumped out of the bed opening the door to find her there tears running down her face and Rhiannon at her side holding tightly to her. That old trunk she had shown up with was behind them. Panic quickly rose inside him, was she leaving? Would she go back to Boston?
"What's wrong?" Daniel asked confused.
"Some men are outside, they woke us up and said we needed to get out of the apartment... they want to talk to you, said if you wouldn't do what they wanted they'd burn the place down."
"W-who are they?" He asked and when she shrugged he feared the worst "I want you to take Rhiannon go to the train station take this money. And if I don't show up in an hour board the trains... go back to Boston." He handed her all the money he had turning her towards the back door.
"But Daniel" December seemed confused and scared. She reached out and took his hand, much to his surprise.
"It'll be okay Ember, just go wait for me there." He said in what he hoped was a convincing voice. To that she nodded and picked up the trunk once more, with Rhiannon's help.
He turned towards the front door grabbing his gun on the way out.
