Chapter four

~

December pulled her cloak close it was already snowing she sighed as she walked out of the swinging saloon doors she wondering why all of the saloons insisted on having those obnoxious doors they made the whole place colder. She went to the small building that doubled as a post office and printing press.

She wanted to see if she got a letter from Penelope yet, she had written her telling of George's death and her new job. She told her that she was saving for Jennie and Laura to come live with her at their ages of eleven and thirteen they weren't likely to be adopted by anyone besides her. Once inside the small and dimly lit building she smiled at the man behind the counter.

"Hello sir, I was wondering if I've gotten any mail?"

"Name?" he asked eyeing her extensively.

"December Knight."

"You're that new Saloon girl ain'tcha?"

"No I'm the new school teacher."

"Oh I can play that game." the man said with an evil glint in his eyes as he grabbed her arm across the counter.

"Leave me alone!" December demanded slapping away his dirty hand.

The man was faster than she thought he quickly came to her side from behind the counter he kissed her his chapped lips brushing hers harshly. "Get off!" she said scratching his face in the process.

"I like em feisty!" the man said laughing.

December heard a gunshot fire in the small building, the loudness of it hurt rang in her ears.

"Get off her Kent!" she heard Daniel say "I won't miss next time." He pointed his pistol at the man.  Who reluctantly let her go.

"C'mon Dan I was just sampling the new soiled dove you got here."

"She's the teacher Kent; there hasn't been a brothel here in a long time. Don't touch her again."

"I'll pay for her-"

"No Kent."

"C'mon Dan you can't keep her all to yourself."

Daniel lifted the pistol where it aimed right at the man's heart

"Don't touch Miss Knight" He warned "or next time I won't miss." With that he walked out of the building dragging December with him.

"Don't go in there without me again" He said glaring at her "Who knows what could have happen if I hadn't walked by, be more responsible December you're in a town where the men outnumber the woman ten too one."

December narrowed her eyes at him "It's not my fault, that man is a snake. Seems there's a lot of that in this town, I'm not going to be afraid to leave my home which happens to be in the top of a saloon."

Daniel dropped his hand from her arm and marched off towards the saloon. She followed him ready to give the man a piece of her mind, but right before she was to walk through the swinging doors she was stopped by the voice of one of her students.

"Mr. Wade!"  Rhiannon yelled running up to the saloon "Mr. Wade!"

"Rhiannon, what's wrong?" December asked the young girl who had tears in her brown eyes.

"It's my Pa, he's real sick I need Mr. Wade he's the only one in town who'll help." Rhiannon told her stopping to take a deep breath in the middle.

"I'll get him." she told her favorite student before running through the swinging doors
