Chapter Eight
~~ ~~
Daniel had kissed many girls before, but none of them caused him to feel as much as he did when December had kissed him. His heart raced so fast he feared it would jump from within his chest. She was different than anyone he'd ever met. Sure he liked to ruffle her feathers but there were times, lots of times when she wasn't mad at him and she was caring and kind. And the way she was with the girls. She awakened a deep desire in his heart, one he had pushed back for so long. The desire to Love and be loved.
But what would she say if she knew of his past? If she knew all of his secrets, would she think him an idiot as his brother had? In all reality he was an idiot. He had been taking the blame for George since they were children; whenever his little brother did something wrong he'd protect him and tell his parents he'd done it. After years of doing that it had become a habit, George had become accustomed to his older brother taking the blame and started blaming him as well. Daniel realized how far out of control it had gotten now, but he couldn't go back and change it. He wished he could be the man December deserved.
He walked towards his family smiling as he heard the girls giggled at something December had said. He reclaimed his seat next to his wife.

December snuggled closer to the warmth at her side and felt an arm tighten around her. Alarmed she opened her eyes to find she had fallen asleep on Daniel's shoulder. She blushed.
"Sorry... I must have dosed off" she said before yawning and pulling away. But she noticed he didn't move his arm, it still was wrapped around her shoulders.
"Don't be, it's a long train ride... but I think we're almost to Denver City."
She nodded listening to Jennie, Laura and Rhiannon talk. She was happy they all got along; since she had her share of squabbling children back at the Orphanage.
"Mr. Wade why is your hair so long?" Jennie asked. December put a hand to her mouth to muffle a laugh.
"I haven't had time for a haircut. Why does it look bad?" he asked seriously causing December to laugh loud enough that she couldn't hide it.
"No it looks wonderful!" Jennie said as Laura giggled "It's just that the men in Boston, well they have short hair."
"We'll it's a good thing I'm not in Boston." Daniel said seriously, making December laugh all the more. She blushed realizing all eyes were on her. Other woman on the train glared at her for being louder then was proper. Daniel laughed at her embarrassment, and she glared at him. She needed to be more on guard, she couldn't let her feelings get in the way... he'd leave her eventually as everyone in her life had. And if she started liking him, it would hurt even more.
"Sorry Ember." He said sheepishly.

December took Rhiannon's hand as they got off the Train. Jennie and Laura linked arms and stood next to her. While Daniel asked the man where the boarding house was, it was much like Boston, only smaller. The town was alive as the sound of piano music came from a nearby saloon. December looked towards Daniel; surely he wouldn't work in a saloon again would he?
"Okay ladies, ready to go to our new home... well for now anyway?" Daniel asked offering his arm to December. He led them to an awaiting carriage that took them the short way to a boarding house.
After checking in Daniel handed a key to Laura.
"Laura You, Jennie and Rhiannon will share a room" Daniel said then turning and giving a key to December "And you and I will share a room." He said with his cocky smile. December felt heat rise to her cheeks at his blunt remark. She tried to not let it show as she helped carry her trunk.
"Don't open the door to anyone; make sure it's us... And Laura you're in charge.
"Why can't I be in charge?" Jennie asked
"Because Laura is the oldest of you three... Now I want you all to stay in the room, got it?" December asked looking at the three girls who nodded "Good I'll see you all in the morning." After hugging all of them and making sure they were settled into the room, she followed Daniel to their room right across the hall. He shut the door behind them and December's heart raced she looked around the room, only one bed.
"D-Daniel I don't know what you're expecting but... I don't think it's wise that we..." she looked towards the bed then at him. Her mouth was dry, and her heart was racing faster than ever as she waited for him reply. She looked to the ground not wanting to see his expression.
He crossed the room taking long strides and gently lifted her chin so she'd look him into the eyes.
"December" he said "I was going to sleep on the floor."
December searched his eyes, to see he was serious. Much like before she stood on her tippy-toes to kiss him, but this time he kissed her back. She had never been kissed before, not like this. The kissed deepened as she opened her mouth allowing him in. She ran her hands threw his curly hair. Her heart felt as though it would jump out of her chest, and her knees felt as though they could no longer hold her weight she leaned against him wrapping her arms around his shoulders. He pulled away from her and searched her face.
"We" Daniel said clearing his throat looking down at his boots "We should probably get some sleep... we've got a lot to do tomorrow..."
December felt her eyes narrow. Had he not liked kissing her? Did he not feel the same way she did? It seemed as though he awakened many desires within her, desires she never knew anything about... before now. What was wrong with her? She wondered, realizing she wanted to be with him. She had no ideas about his belief. He had been a saloon owner. She couldn't allow herself to be with someone that didn't share her beliefs... or her feelings.
~~ ~~
Daniel saw the look on December's face. She was angry with him. Had she wanted him as much as he wanted her? She walked behind the room separator returning a few minutes later wearing only her chemise. Her long silky black hair was down, falling in waves past her waist. He yearned to run his hands threw it. She walked towards the bed lifting the covers in only the light of the full moon.
"Good night." She said lying down and throwing a pillow and extra wool blanket to the ground for him.
He couldn't help but smile, if she only knew how crazy she drove him. "Good night Ember." He said kicking off his boots.
"Don't call me that... how would you like it if I called you Danny" She said irritated.
His smile broadened by the new nickname "I think I shall like being called Danny by you." He said unbuttoning his shirt. She turned away from him shifting to her other side. She sighed, admitting defeat.
He folded the wool blanket lying on the floor he wondered what would have happened if he hadn't stopped kissing her? It was better this way wasn't it? She could think he was a lowly cad of a saloon owner... if he could have just met her two years ago... she would have met a well groomed doctor loved by the town, with money in a bank.
She deserved better than him. So then why did he hang so tightly to the idea of a family with her? Why had he agreed to marry her? To sign those adoption papers? And why had he promised not to leave her?
He was being selfish; he didn't deserve any of this... Lord He prayed I'm sorry I haven't spoken to you in so long... but if December and I are met to be please let us work out... don't let my past scare her off. I don't think I could bear to lose her, or our girls.
