Chapter twelve
"You're George aren't you?" December asked looking at the man who favored Daniel so much they could almost pass for twins.
"Guilty" he answered with an easy smile causing December to second guess her first impression of him.
"Why... why did you fake your own death? Why weren't you there to marry me?" December questioned
"I'm terribly sorry about that darling, but I had to escape Dan, he's different then he acts you know... he's a-a thief..."
December's anger rose "Don't speak of my husband like that!" she said narrowing her eyes at him. She knew Daniel and she knew he wasn't like that, he was a hard worker.
"Did you ever wonder why he's got so many jobs?" George asked.
"What do you mean?" December asked glaring at the man on the other side of the carriage.
"He's robbed a lot of people... why do you think he's no longer a doctor? He was once a very sought after man, he was very skilled as the town doctor... but then he wasn't happy enough, he needed more money-"
"I don't believe you George." December said stubbornly not wanting to believe what the man said, she had never heard of any of this before, it did make since what he was saying but she didn't want to believe this man.
"You know me December, I wrote you letters... we can still wed, just get you marriage to my brother annulled."
"You weren't there, he was. I don't care what you say he's my husband" she said firmly reaching to open the door of the carriage "Good Day Mr. Wade-"
"I'm afraid I can't let you go my dear" George said grabbing onto her arm "You see Dan said he doesn't want you any longer, why do you think he sent me?"
That last part hit her hard, was it possible everything George said was true? Did Daniel really not want her like she thought?
"H-he said that?" December asked feeling like her heart had just shattered into a million pieces.
"Mhmm... he said he wanted to get the marriage annulled as soon as possible." George said his icy eyes looking sympathetic "I'm sorry you had to find out like this."
December was breathless it felt like everything she'd ever thought was wrong, did she really know him? She had thought he loved her but now she wasn't too sure.

Daniel was starting to worry about December he looked towards the girls in the back of buckboard.
"Perhaps she's working hard on a dress... maybe you should go knock on the door?" Laura offered
Daniel nodded walking up to the darkened dress shop, she should have been done by now, and he felt like something was amiss. He knocked on the door to Rosemary's dresses hoping and praying she was in there.
"Mr. Wade?" Rosemary said when she finally came to open the door "What are you doing here?"
"Is Mrs. Wade here?" he asked hopeful
"No she left some time ago... is something wrong?"
"I'm not sure." Daniel said looking back at the buckboard, he couldn't drag the girls around the city in the cold weather like this, it seemed like it would soon be snowing, and he didn't want to leave them alone in the old saloon they were fixing up.
"Did you see where she went?" he asked
"I'm afraid not... I said goodbye to her and she walked out the door I assumed you'd be out there to take her home. Where do you think she might be?"
