Chapter Seven

~~

December couldn't believe her eyes "Laura? Jennie? What are you two doing here?" she stepped forward to hug the girls she had deeply missed since leaving the Ramsey Orphanage.

"Dee!" Laura said excitedly stepping back from hugging her to look into her face, her kind light blue-green eyes searching her face "Didn't you read the letter from Miss Ritter? She told you that as a surprise she paid for our passage, we even got the adoption papers all you have to do is sign them."  December felt bad she still hadn't opened Penelope's letter.

"Are you not excited?" Jennie asked quietly panic running threw her dark blue eyes.

"Of course I'm excited it's just-"

"Who's this?" Laura asked looking towards Rhiannon with a kind smile.

"And where's that husband of yours?" Jennie asked looking around. Pulling her shawl closer to her

"Girls" December said trying to get their attention "This is Rhiannon-" Her sentence was cut short when they heard a loud gunshot rang threw the air Daniel December felt as though her heart stopped beating and she feared the worst had he been shot? Should she run to find him? He had told her to wait for him here but a big part of her wanted to go running towards the saloon.

"December..." Laura said with wide eyes "W-What was that?"

She didn't answer. She looked towards the direction of the main street. She couldn't leave the girls could she? Her heart nearly dropped to her stomach as another shot sounded in the air. She gathered the girls close to her and they held on to her in fear. Rhiannon looked up at her with tears running down her face.

"Do you think h-he... died?" Rhiannon asked quietly. December felt tears in her eyes. She needed to stay strong but to think such horrible thought made her heart feel like it had shattered into a thousand pieces.

December shook her head "I'm sure he's... fine." She told the girl hugging her before turning towards the man who sold tickets. Daniel had told her to get on the train. She doubted she had enough to get all four of them to Boston but they could however get to Denver.

"Four tickets to Denver please." She said trying not to cry.

"Make that five." December heard the deep voice come from behind her His voice. She turned towards him shocked. He stood close to her making her heart beat quicken. Before she could doubt herself she leaned towards him hugging him for all she was worth.

Daniel was shocked as December put her arms around his waist and laid her head against his chest. Was she crying? He didn't know what to do, but he knew he liked this new side of her. He wrapped his arms around her and marveled at how natural it felt to hold her closely.

"Oh Daniel... I thought you had been killed." She said in a tear stricken voice, again shocking him. He didn't know what to say so he held her tighter. He kissed her forehead before releasing her. He took the money from her hand and paid Luther for their train tickets.

"What about your work and the saloon?" December questioned as he handed all the tickets to her.

"Ember...  We'll discuss it later." He said hoping she wouldn't press it. He turned back to Luther knowing he'd be able to give Paul his message.

"Lu would you please tell Paul thanks for all his help at the saloon?" Luther nodded he seemed curious but didn't ask questions.

"Daniel" Rhiannon said looking up at him "I'm glad you didn't die." Daniel couldn't help but smile at the girl's sincerity.
