Chapter Ten
~
December sighed looking down at her paint splattered dress. Jennie giggled at something Laura and Rhiannon had said and Daniel worked at tearing down the bar. They had been working hard to fix up the building and it looked a lot better, but it still needed a lot of work. They were to open in only two weeks. December stretched before she went back to painting. Christmas would be soon, only next month and the girls needed new clothes... she had so much to do and not enough time to do anything. Should she get something for Daniel? He was her husband.
She sighed and put down the paint brush realizing how late it was, she needed to cook dinner. She made her way to the small back room that held a small cast iron stove. She lit the lantern to put of some light in the dimly lit room. It was their first night they'd be sleeping in the old building and it seemed quiet compared to the boarding house they had been staying in.
She started in on making the chili. All they had were beans and very little amount of meat, but she knew how to make the dish thanks to Penelope who often cooked for the children in the orphanage.
She could hear the girls laughing from the main room causing her to smile, she hadn't seen Laura or Jennie that happy ever, and Rhiannon was adjusting well to having two big sisters.
They were all getting along, all of them except Daniel and her... lately all they did was disagree about everything, from the color of the paint to the school the girls attended... but isn't that all they ever did? Since the moment she'd met him they had clashed on everything. So then why did it bother her now?

Daniel sighed as he entered the large room; the small wood burning stove would keep him warm enough. He guessed December would be sharing the bedroom with Laura, Jennie and Rhiannon he could hear them giggling from the next room. He didn't blame her, after the way they had been fighting lately he understood her want for a different room. It was better this way; he didn't need to get even more attached to them. Someday he knew they'd come back for him those men wanted their money; he still was trying to pay for his brothers debt.
He rolled onto his side facing away from the door. He closed his eyes only to see December's heart shaped face, her beautiful eyes one bright blue and the other dark brown her high cheek bones, her long flowing raven black hair and tanned skin. Everything about her attracted him, even the way she crossed her arms and clinched her jaw when she was going to be stubborn about something. The way she walked tall and determined. He had found her attractive since the first moment she walked into his saloon. But still it puzzled him that George mail-ordered a bride. He hadn't said anything about her before he died not even once. If he remembered right the last thing his little brother had said was that he was going to be leaving town for a while.
"Daniel?" December said quietly walking into the dark room. Daniel got up and lit a lantern so he could see her. She looked down at her feet and then back at him.
"I need to talk to you." She said standing up straighter. He moved closer to her with the lantern in his hand. The glow off it sent shadows across the room as he walk towards her.
"What's wrong?" Daniel questioned
"I wanted to apologize to you... for how I've been acting, and I wanted to invite you to join me and the girls on Sunday, we're going to church." Daniel nodded thoughtfully; he used to enjoy church before.
"I'll think about it." he said putting the lantern down on the old table next to him.
"I'm really sorry Danny... I really hope you'll come with us, but I understand if you won't." Daniel couldn't help but smile; he really did like it when she used his nickname.
