Chapter Five

~~

Daniel knocked on the door to upstairs apartment that December and Rhiannon now occupied. He sighed heavy hoping she wouldn't slam the door in his face. He knocked again, and this time she answered with a lantern in her hand, she had a flannel nightgown on and a matching bonnet over her hair. Her high cheekbones caught his attention he hadn't really noticed them before, but they were quite becoming.

"And just what do you think you're doing here?" December asked holding the lantern high so she could see him "It's the middle of the night."

"The stove downstairs broke, it's freezing down there and I was wondering if I could sleep up here tonight, I'll fix it tomorrow."

She glared at him "Just because were married-"

"I'd sleep on the floor... Unless you want to be a widow I could go back downstairs and get pneumonia."

"Fine... but stay away from the bedroom."

"I am your husband now you know."

"In name only!"

"Oh does this mean that instead of calling you Miss Knight the children at school will now call you Mrs. Wade?"

"Look we can go get this marriage annulled right now."

"December I was only joshing you calm down."

She looked at him in such a way that he was glad she wasn't the killing kind.

"Good night Mrs.-"

"It's Miss Knight."

"Not since yesterday." He said holding up his hand that held the simple band on it.

"Well it won't be 'Mrs. Wade' for very long so why get used to it?"

"Where did you get your name?" he asked ignoring her question

"Pardon?"

"Your name... December Knight."

She sighed and he was sure she was going to roll her eyes but much to his surprise she didn't.

"Phoebe and her little sister Penelope Ritter named me as they do all the children at the Ramsey orphanage, who don't have names.  I was found on the doorstep on the night of December 20th so they named me after the month I was born and found, my middle name is Ritter after them and Knight was my mother's last name... she left a note along with me."

"I'm sorry I-I didn't know." he said sincerity dripping his voice she seemed shocked at his kindness, which made him feel bad for the way he treated her.

"It's all right." She said slowly opening the door wider letting him in. He gladly walked in and lay down next to the small cast iron stove.

"Thank you December." He told her closing his eyes as he heard her walk across the wooden floor and too the bedroom shutting the door.  December Ritter Wade, The name did roll off the tongue. To be honest he wasn't in any hurry to get their marriage annulled.

December woke up to the smell of bacon and coffee she stretched and looked next to her where Rhiannon had slept. Not seeing her she figured that she had made them breakfast.  She reached for her night robe and tied it before entering the living room that doubled as a kitchen. Rhiannon set at the small table laughing as Daniel sung some song while he cooked.

December smiled slightly at the scene in front of her but she quickly recovered. She couldn't let him know she thought it was sweet what he was doing. She couldn't like him.
