Chapter thirteen
Ryanne read the letter again as Kathleen read it over her shoulder.
"What on earth has gotten into him?" Ryanne asked her best friend as she closed the letter and handed it to her.
"It's very odd... you haven't seen him since that dinner?" Kathleen asked only to have Ryanne nod in reply.
"I think... I think we need a man's opinion." Kathleen stated as she stood up from where she sat on her bed.
"None of my brothers, they all disapprove of Edgar."
"All four? Even Avery? But he likes everyone!"
"Anthony thinks he's a gold digger, Adam thinks he's not good enough for me, Alexander thinks he's not sincere and Avery thinks he's hiding something."
"We could ask my brother" Kathleen suggested with a slight smile "Kade would be more than willing to help you..."
"I guess it couldn't hurt..." Ryanne said only to have Kathleen run from the room before she could finish her sentence. She had to admit she had a slight crush on Kade Staten, but he only thought of her like a sister, of that she was sure.
Ryanne held her breath as he walked into the room, more handsome then ever she thought as his brown hair was messy unlike the usual slicked back look he went for, his light green eyes searched her face as he entered Kathleen's room, and he wore simple clothes that he always did when he planned on staying at the Staten estate.
"What's wrong Rye?" he asked walking towards her "Kat said you needed my help."
"Here read this" Kathleen said handing him Edgar's letter.
After he was done reading it he looked up towards Kathleen first then Ryanne. Kathleen spoke up first telling him about their dinner.
"Sounds to me it could be one of two things... either he knew this girl, and had to trace her down or he's just busy with his work..."
"What would he be doing with another woman?" Ryanne asked almost angrily as she stood from the chair at the corner of Kathleen's room. Kade almost blushed and avoided her gaze.
"Do you think he would cheat on me?" Ryanne asked quietly stepping closer to Kade. This time he looked straight at her his green eyes seemed to sparkle like gems in the sunlight.
"Ryanne, any man would be the luckiest man on earth to be with you... if he is doing that, and I'm not saying he is, then he's a Damn fool."

George smiled at December she was completely gorgeous, one of the most gorgeous women he'd ever seen and he'd seen a lot of women. Her eyes were captivating, One light blue, almost the color of a cerulean sky and the other was a rich dark brown. Her hair was raven black and had the appearance of rich silk, while her skin was well tanned as if she enjoyed long hours in the sun. She had high cheek bones and a heart shaped face. And the fact she was such a spitfire made her even more appealing.
He was angry at his brother for marring his intended but he couldn't blame him. Had he know she was such a beauty he would have stayed long enough at least for the wedding night.
His original plan for her was to wed her so he appeared more innocent to the town's people, who'd think a man with a family was capable of such crimes? No one they'd all just continue to believe it was his saloon owner brother.
"We leave tomorrow at dawn." He informed her kicking off his boots.
"I will not share a bed with you, nor will I share a room." December snapped crossing her arms.
"I won't have you running away on me Mrs. Wade."
"I-"Her reply was cut short by a light knock on the door. He motioned for her to answer it.
"Who's there?" she asked quietly.
"Daniel... can I talk to you?"
George wondered how he had found them so easily; it had only been a few hours since the letter was sent. The letter the young man who delivered it must have spilled the beans or Daniel had followed him back to the hotel. He made a mental note to dispose of that servant. George gave December instructions on what to say telling her that he's kill her family if she didn't do what he told her too, before he got into the closet to listen.

December slowly opened the door; she bit her lip to keep from crying. She couldn't bear to look Daniel in the eyes, although she longed to look into his gorgeous eyes. They were a beautiful dark blue, but at times they'd change color to a lighter blue.
"Ember... care to explain this letter?" Daniel asked calmly holding the letter in the air.
December cleared her throat and looked down at her hands "What's there to explain, I thought I was very clear." She said stiffly.
"Look at me..." Daniel said in a whisper putting his hand under her chin and gently making her look at him. December couldn't help but cry, never had she felt so helpless. She sent a prayer heavenward, a silent plea for guidance. She remembered George's warning and again cleared her throat.
"Tell me the truth..." he said still in a whisper.
December's gaze flew towards the closet door where George hid. She needed to protect her family.
"Daniel I don't... I don't love you and I think you should leave." December said almost choking up as she spoke the untrue words.
"I don't believe you..." Daniel said shaking his head "you're lying."
December looked again towards the closet door then back at Daniel "Danny d-don't do this. I'm serious... you mean nothing to me... I only married you because your brother was dead... you're
only a second choice." She said almost breaking down, the words hurt her to say she could only imagine how he felt to hear them.
"I don't believe you." Daniel said stepping closer to her.
"I can't be with you... Daniel leave." She said looking towards the closet scared he'd shoot her for him not believing her. Daniel followed her gaze seeming confused "Leave" she said this time louder and more firm hoping he'd listen.
He turned towards the door but stopped and turned towards her "Ember" he said with that usual smirk gone "I love you... and I always will."
She bit her lip to keep from crying "Goodbye Daniel." She said holding the door for him looking anywhere but into his eyes. Once he left she leaned against the door letting the tears fall freely. It seemed just when she thought things were going good, life threw her another twist another turn.
"Good you got rid of him... I think we should leave tonight don't you my dear?"
"Don't call me that George Wade. I am not nor will I ever be your dear!" December said angrily wiping her tears "My heart belongs to your brother not you."
December glared at him as she stood up on her own ignoring his offered hand, she would find a way to escape him, and a way to save her family from him. She just had too.
