I had looked forward to it.
To show off my mother and Rick.
Show everyone how I was from a good family who had good jobs.
To show everyone I was worthy.
That afternoon I used the payphone to call my mother.
She told me she wasn't going to be there tonight.
Rick had a volleyball game, and he was in the finals.
She needed to support him.
Before the game, she drove to the gym and dropped off a bag of chocolate and roses to the coach. Who relayed a message for her.
"Give these to each of the girls on the cheer team. You can keep what's left."
So, after my teammates and their parents were announced and walked the gym floor, I handed each of them a rose and chocolates at the exit.
They told me to thank my mother for her generosity.
