Gerard lived a very normal life.
Every day, they would wake up and immediately start working on their next big art piece. Their inspiration was often the galaxy and vast space, or myths that people far away from their home had created, like vampires and zombies. Perhaps, Gerard thought, somewhere out in the universe, vampires and zombies were creatures living on some strange planet.
They would finish up their work so that they didn't forget to eat breakfast, and then they would walk to their (only) friend's house. They would talk for a while about very philosophical and important issues, and then they would play guitar together. Sometimes they even wrote songs.
Gerard's friend was a loser; they didn't look anything like the rest of society, so they never fit in. Gerard could relate a little, so the two of them stuck together so they could both be lame loners together.
After all of that, Gerard would walk back home. It took a long time to walk all the way back on their own, but they didn't mind. It was nice to get some fresh air. When they finally arrived in their living space, they'd do their chores while humming some weird, foreign "rock" music, and then eat some dinner before going straight to bed. Usually Gerard still tried to stay up late to finish whatever art piece they were working on in the morning, though.
It was a simple life, and although Gerard liked it, they wished for something new. They would wander around sometimes, looking for something odd to happen that they could be a part of.
One fateful afternoon, Gerard stumbled across a poster advertising a space expedition. Anyone was welcome to ask for a spot in it — everybody where Gerard was from was trained for space travel (just in case) — so Gerard marked it on their calendar to apply for a spot in two days, just like the poster explained would be the opening day for the applications. Coincidentally, Gerard's one friend had found the same advertisement and signed up as well.
When finally Gerard found themself in The Hall of Expeditions, they curiously looked around. Usually, The Hall was reserved only for famed and experienced adventurers, not local oddities like Gerard... but there they were, exploring The Hall before they applied to explore something much greater — a new planet.
As they walked through the open, grand entryway, they noticed someone very distinct. It was impossible not to know who it was.
"Lola!" Gerard called out as they rushed towards their friend.
Lola turned around to face Gerard, a great big smile on their face — just like always. Gerard tackled Lola in a huge hug, but Lola stayed grounded. They wrapped their arms around Gerard tightly; they were very used to giving hugs. Gerard pulled away and smiled warmly, their eyes shining in pure excitement... before morphing into a look of confusion as they tilted their head.
"Did you sign up, too?" Gerard asked.
Lola remained silent (per usual).
Gerard's smile popped back up on their face even bigger. They punched Lola's arm lightly and grinned toothily.
"What a coincidence. I hope we both get in," Gerard replied.
Then suddenly, Gerard was straightening their blue suit and red tie, slicking back their bright red-orange hair more than it already was (they tended to use a lot of hair gel when trying to look professional).
"Do I look formal enough?" they questioned.
Lola stayed quiet, but Gerard nodded and smiled again as if they understood.
