(trigger warning for violence, guns, and crying)
Gerard heard shoes fall down onto the concrete behind him. He swiveled around to see who it was, but he really should've known. Frank grabbed his tie and held it tight, restraining him. Then he pulled a gun out and smirked in a stupid way that made Gerard want to punch his lights out. Unfortunately, Frank's smirk simultaneously caused Gerard to want to kiss his dumb face really hard and aggressively. Frank leaned forward and showed his pearly whites, which glimmered in the moonlight.
"Well, hello, Gee," he jested, tilting his head to the right. Gerard tried to tear away from him, but even though he was super powerful and strong, Frank had a serious iron grip in an inhuman way.
He grunted as he tried to pull away again and again, but he was physically incapable. Frank just beamed, raising his eyebrows. "What do you want," Gerard deadpanned. He wasn't asking.
Gerard was a kind, understanding and sympathetic guy. But this wasn't the first time Frank had put a weapon to his head, and he was sick of his routine — save the city, save himself, try to apprehend and talk some sense into Frank... but to no avail.
Frank didn't even seem like a real villain; he just wanted to have fun, and if he died or killed someone else in the act, so be it. He had a lot of energy and a lot of boredom, and those traits paired with trauma produced an insufferable party animal.
"I want to fight again, old friend," Frank suggested with that falsely polite tone of voice that made Gerard want to tear off his face. "It's been a while—"
"A week," Gerard interrupted.
Frank squinted and got up in Gerard's space so much that their noses pushed together uncomfortably. "Well, friends don't just leave friends for weeks on end, do they?" He pressed the gun in Gerard's skin instead of having it hover over his head. "Much less months... or nearly a year. Wouldn't you say?"
Frank "hmmed" in a degrading way that made it sound like he was asking a baby. Gerard scowled and stealthily drew a knife from the holster on his belt, not quite pulling it out all the way so that Frank noticed. "I did what I did for a reason. You needed help, so I sent you to a mental institute. That's what friends do, Frank."
Frank pouted, and a gust of wind blowing by tussled his dark hair and blew the tails of his coat. "Friends send each other to the loony bin? Is that your take on it?" He tugged harshly on Gerard's tie and lead him to the edge of the large balcony, and Gerard was starting to feel like a dog on a leash.
"Doesn't really seem like we're friends as much as you're some guy with a god complex..." Frank paused here, his expression suddenly melancholy, "and I'm another faceless victim you get to save." He growled out the next words: "No strings attached."
Frank bent Gerard over so his left ear was crushed again the cold railing. He raised his gun again and laughed like something out of a horror movie, his head tilting back in glee. "Karma is really a hilarious creature. First you stabbed me in the back and now..." he trailed off to drag a finger down Gerard's spine. "...I'm going to stab you in the back." He laughed again. It made Gerard's blood curdle.
Gerard thought for a moment. Though he really should've been scared that he was about to meet his demise, Frank had been dragging this on a while, and he really could've just shot him in the head when he came up from behind just a few minutes ago. He was starting to wonder if Frank was actually going to do it or chicken out. He decided he could bet a substantial amount of money — and his life — on the likelihood of the "chicken out" option, so he could also correct Frank. "Pretty sure there's a gun pressed up to my back. You can't stab me with a gun," he corrected.
Frank "hmmed" again and Gerard could hear him scratch his stubble. "You have a point." Then he made an indifferent grunt and shrugged his shoulders. "Oh well. I'll just make you feel the pain of being stabbed in the back. That's all that really matters, right?"
Gerard smiled a genuine smile. "Oh, but you know what also really matters?"
"Can we get onto the killing part?"
"This."
Gerard grabbed the gun out of Frank's hand from behind him while he caught him off guard, turned around, and grabbed the collar of Frank's shirt. He lifted him off the ground with sheer force and backed him into a wall. Then he threw the gun off the balcony and drew out his knife. He pointed it at Frank as a warning.
Frank chuckled breathily. It was difficult for him to get any noise out, what with his throat being squeezed by his shirt. "You won't really stab me with that."
Now it was Gerard's turn to smirk. "Just like you never really planned on shooting me with that gun," he mused.
Frank looked deep into Gerard's earthy eyes, like he was staring through his soul and beckoning all of his secrets out. He laughed again, this time slightly maniacally, but still just as broken since his windpipe was being closed off. "I'd miss you too much, just like I did in the psych ward." Gerard frowned. Frank continued, "You left me to rot there," he informed him, telling the story like he was amused by it. Like it was some old chapter of his life he'd abandoned and came back to to laugh at. Except this story was recent. "And you never apologize for it."
"I did it to save you," Gerard said impatiently.
Frank's eyes widened with rage and his eyebrows tilted downwards. His frown deepened. "I don't care what your intentions were!" he yelled, causing him to cough and wheeze right after he got the words out. He continued, more quietly, but just as angered, "You hurt me, Gee. Friends don't hurt friends, friends don't turn friends bad guys that they can bring to justice just to feel like they've done something right. Friends don't leave their friends and have them wonder if they were ever friends at all," he finished with a whisper. "I wanted to believe that we were friends," he added, "so I would cling to you and do whatever you want. But now you've turned me into the villain, and even though I can enjoy it at times, it's not curing me."
"You're a disease," Frank finished, and his eyes trailed down to the floor.
Gerard's throat tightened and felt tender. He wanted to cry, but he wouldn't let himself. He'd already built up his strength. He couldn't let his walls down, even if Frank had.
"Frank," Gerard said, "I wouldn't have tried to take you to a place where you're supposed to get help, if I wasn't your friend. Friends help other friends."
"Or maybe friends use other friends, in your eyes," Frank choked out. "Because that institute did nothing other than make me sicker."
Gerard lowered his weapon to his holster and Frank to the floor, but kept his grip on him strong. "I didn't mean for that to happen," he replied dismally. "You don't trust me enough to know that I'd never make you suffer on purpose?"
Frank looked up at Gerard, and Gerard could just see the hurt flooding his eyes. Then his eyebrows lowered and scrunched. "Don't turn this on me, Gerard," he warned.
"I'm not," Gerard promised, "I'm just upset. I tried so hard to get you help, a place where people would understand you more than I do, and it did the opposite of what I wanted. You're not the real bad guy, Frank," he confessed. "I am."
That's when the dam broke. Both of them started to cry, and tears rolled down their cheeks as they embraced each other. Their bodies wracked with sobs, shaking and pulling into each other. It was stupid, really, because had one of them been lying to make the other sympathetic, they could easily pull a weapon out and kill them right then and there, but they realized that their hero-villain dynamic and broken friendship were all caused by a misunderstanding and some mistrust. And opening up to each other like this and then crying into each other's shoulders was the ultimate test of trust.
Frank moved his face from Gerard's upper arm to his head, and pressed his nose against his chin. Gerard's arms, which were wrapped around Frank, tightened and reeled him in.
And so they sat there, a quaking mess of tears on a balcony. Not a hero a villain... just two guys realizing their horrible mistakes.
(not sure how i like this one but it was fun to write. this just me making batjokes fanfic and then giving them different names oh well)
