Mikey, Ray, Gerard, and Frank were Halloween-ready. Gerard was dressed as a vampire, Frank was dressed as Frankenstein's monster (fitting), Mikey was dressed as a ghost (he had a blanket over his head and that was it), and Ray was dressed as a wizard.
"Are we really expecting anyone to give us candy?" Gerard asked. "We're obviously not little kids... except for Frank. He could probably pass as one."
Frank shoved Gerard a little.
"No harm in trying," Mikey said, muffled under his blanket.
And so, the gang of grown men in face paint and flimsily-made costumes traversed their neighborhood in search of candy.
"This is actually a terrible idea," Ray stated. "Kids out at nighttime in New Jersey... doesn't really mix."
Frank flattened Ray's pointy hat and noogied him. "Don't diss my home. But yeah... you're right. That could be dangerous for anyone."
Mikey was stumbling and holding Gerard's hand like the leash of a guide dog. "If someone comes at us, I'll haunt 'em."
Gerard grinned. "I'll bite 'em."
"Kinky," Frank mumbled, so Ray elbowed him. "Ow!"
"Loser," Ray jested.
They stopped at a few houses in a lame attempt to gather candy. Some people gave them some small, stingy pieces. A few gave Mikey candy.
"What?!" Frank complained. "Why'd you get candy?"
Mikey shrugged. "My disguise is working."
"My face is very baby-like," Gerard said. "I should get candy, too."
"You sound like a teenager, though," Ray laughed.
Gerard gasped and put a hand to his heart like he'd been shot. "How dare you!"
Ray giggled.
While his friends laughed with him, Ray faintly heard someone shouting. He suddenly stopped laughing and turned around. Two teens, one in a black hoodie and a baseball cap and the other in some jeans and a cheap Halloween mask, were pushing a group of clearly uncomfortable kids around.
Ray nudged Gerard and pointed his head at them. His hat nearly fell off. "I think those guys're bullying those kids," he muttered.
Gerard turned his head to look at the group on the other sidewalk. One of the victims, who was in a red hoodie, was fiercely spitting at the taller kid. He dipped his head forward, trying to hear their conversation.
"...I'm just saying," said Baseball Cap.
"Get bent," Red Hoodie said. "Why don't you go and shove your opinions up your ass?"
Baseball Cap snickered to Zombie Mask and pushed him forward. "Alright, you little fucker, you wanna fight?"
"Dude," said a friend of Red Hoodie, "let's just go, alright? This other house has king-sized candy bars."
"I'm not going down without a fucking fight," Red Hoodie yelled.
"I guess you wouldn't mind if I punched you, since you're a dude?" Zombie Mask taunted.
"AGH!" Red Hoodie cried, then slapped Zombie Mask in the face.
Gerard and Ray's eyes widened. "Come on, man," said Ray, and they ran over to the kids.
"Oh, hey!" Gerard yelled. "We've been looking all over for you guys!"
Zombie Mask and Baseball Cap glared at Ray and Gerard. "Come on, we told you not to go without supervision!" Ray ad libbed.
They both smiled big, fake smiles at Baseball Cap and Zombie Mask. "Hey, sorry for taking your friends away from you, but we've gotta go," Gerard added.
"We're not—" Baseball Cap started before Zombie Mask kicked him in the leg.
"Nah, man, it's cool," Zombie Mask. "We were just saying 'bye.'"
Gerard smiled again, then he and Ray shouldered the group away.
"Who the hell are you?" One of the kids asked when they were away from the bullies.
"I'm Gerard, and this is Ray," Gerard said. "We heard them messing with you so we came over here to help."
Red Hoodie scoffed. "We're not weak. We don't need your help," he grunted.
Gerard and Ray exchanged glances. "What were they telling you?" Ray asked.
"They said you can only be the gender you're born as," a girl said, then was slapped in the arm by her friend.
"Shut up," they hissed.
Ray smiled sympathetically. "No, no, it's okay," he reassured.
"Yeah, we're cool with that," Gerard said. "I'm sorry they were being jerks."
Frank and Mikey rushed over, Mikey slightly weighed down by his half-full bag of candy.
"What happened?" Frank asked.
"These kids were being harassed," Ray said.
"We would've been fine without you," Red Hoodie groaned.
"Probably," Gerard shrugged. "It was pretty fuckin' rad when you hit the guy," he said and grinned. "We just wanted to step in. It's not okay to be bothered about something as dumb as that."
Red Hoodie looked down at his shoes and smiled. "Thanks, dude," he replied quietly.
And so, Mikey, Ray, Gerard, and Frank got to hang out with some really cool and valid kids on Halloween.
(happy halloween you filthy animals /j)
