Mikey

I press my cigarette into an ash tray and snub it out. Okay, moping has become boring. What else can I do?

I have some options ranging from equally boring to surprisingly ambitious. I could keep playing verbal (message-al?) tennis with Frank about my fucking Christmas gift that he hasn't given up on since November. I could eat a tub of ice cream and try not to wallow again while I do it. I could actually clean my kind of disgusting room. Or...

           I could save Christmas.

Okay, yeah, with this family's experience, it won't be easy. But we can't just keep crying over the past. It's making us all depressed... more than we actually are.

Jesus, I never really thought about it, but Gerard and I probably have a lot of undiagnosed mental shit that needs taking care of. Never thought about that until now.

Alright. Christmas. What happens on Christmas other than...? Than... the incident...

I shake my head like a dog. As if that'll remove the thought. I know it's still in the back of my mind somewhere. I'll just pretend I don't have it.

TURKEY! Ever seen any Christmas movie? They always have a big Christmas dinner with turkey. They kind of copied Thanksgiving, I guess. But it's a start!

           Car time.

I prance into the kitchen jollily, both to bring some Christmas cheer and also because I am genuinely happy for the first time in a month. Gerard and Mom look at me kind of funny because literal seconds ago I was all depressed just like them.

Little do they know, I still am! But I'm kind of making an effort, so I feel better emotionally!

"I'm gonna go run to the store," I explain as I walk to the garage.

Gerard raises his eyebrows. "What d'ya need?"

Should I keep this a surprise? Yeah, I should keep this a surprise. "More cigs," I lie. "I'll be back."

Gerard allows a small smile on his face, but his eyes are still sad. "Alright, bye, Mikey," he replies.

"Bye." I step into the garage. There she is: the car the Way family has shared for as long as I can remember... so probably longer than I've been alive. It sure can take a beating. I get into the car and drive out onto the street.

"What's up?" Frank asks after he came back from his shopping trip. Based on his empty-handed-ness and the single candy cane dangling out of his mouth, I can assume the trip was unproductive.

"I'm studying some crime-y shit," I answer eloquently. The computer in front of me is lagging and beeping horribly because I'd been opening and reopening a ton of articles. A ton of articles about Christmas murder and freak accidents.
