Mikey breathed heavily as he ran on his little stubby legs to his friend Frank's house with a small creature in his arms. His glasses slid down his nose as he ran.

When he had at last arrived at the home of his neighbor, he stumbled up, rang the doorbell, and hid the animal behind his back. He passed the critter into one hand and used the other to fumble through his pocket for his inhaler. He brought it to his mouth. He sucked some air in, then exhaled out. Frank's mom came up to the door, who scared Mikey a little, though there was nothing to be afraid of. She wore brown sunglasses atop her head and had thin, blonde hair.

"Oh, hey Michael!" she greeted him. Mikey flinched at his full name. "Frank's up in his room. Should I go get him?"

Mikey took a deep breath and nodded automatically, clicking his tongue quickly twice. "Yes, please," he squeaked, and so Mrs. Iero gave him a nice, warm smile and stepped inside the house, leaving the door open.

"I'll be right back," she announced. Then she began ascending up the stairs, leaving Mikey to awkwardly rock back on his heels and then up to his toes, then back again. Then forth again. He clicked his tongue again and jolted his head a little. He looked behind him to check if the critter was still there, and it was. It laid in his firm — but careful — grip, confused and a little afraid. Mikey felt a little bad.

"Don't worry, little friend," he whispered. "We're gonna take care of you." Then he started to hide it behind his back again.

"Mikey!" a loud voice spoke. "Is that a rat?"

Mikey froze, looked up from the "rat" and at the voice. It was Frank, whose tan eyes were wide with amazement.

"No," Mikey informed him. He held the creature out for Frank to see. "A possum — our new friend." He blinked and clicked.

Frank snatched up the possum and looked into its beady eyes. He grinned widely. "Woah, rad!" He handed the possum back to Mikey. "What's his name?"

Mikey pushed his glasses up his nose before gently pulling the possum out of his friend's hands. "She's a she."

"Oh, okay," Frank replied. "What's her name?"

Mikey smiled softly. "I want to name her Daisy."

Frank grin became wider, if possible. "I like it! Daisy," he repeated for good measure. "Where's she gonna live?"

Mikey rocked back onto his heels again, took a deep breath, clicked two times quickly, and then one more time. "I thought maybe she could live here." He thought for a moment, looking up at the bright blue, summer sky. "If it's okay with your parents," he added.

Frank chewed on the inside of his lip, twisting his mouth to the side of his face. "I'll have to ask my mom."

Mikey exhaled. "Okay."

So Frank snatched Daisy from Mikey's grasp and ran back inside.

Mikey sighed annoyedly, but he'd learned to expect Frank's impulsive behavior by now. So he simply waited, itching his scalp and rocking up on his toes. Then back on his heels. Up. Then down.

Distantly, Mikey heard a high pitched yelp. Frank walked back into the doorway moments later.

"So she said no," Frank explained. "Can Daisy live in your house?"

Mikey's throat became tender with anxiety. He reached for his inhaler, ticked, and then brought it to his lips. He inhaled, then shoved it back into his baggy jeans' pocket. "I, uh... I... I'm scared... I... I'm afraid to ask. What if she doesn't like Daisy? What if she's allergic?"

Frank's face screwed up in bewilderment. "Is it even possible to be allergic to possums?" He smiled, but when he realized Mikey was still breathing unevenly, he responded, "It's okay, though. I'll ask for you. And if she says no... it'll be okay! I'll just sneak Daisy into my room! Don't be upset."

Mikey clicked, then sniffled a little. "I guess... I guess you could ask her." He weighed his options. "Okay," he decided.

Frank beamed. "Rad!" he exclaimed. "Let's go."

Then he held out his grubby little kid hand for Mikey. Mikey passed Daisy to his left hand and cautiously took Frank's with his right. "Yeah," he mumbled. "Okay," he said more clearly.

And together, the two friends walked down the street, towards Mikey's house. The sun in the center of the sky dipped slightly, signaling afternoon. And Mikey thought that maybe it'd all be fine, because even though talking was stressful and people worried him, Frank would be on his side. Because that's what best friends are for.
