Mistakes || Outer Banks

Part 19 - First day

The next day, Oc woke up to the sound of Jj knocking lightly on the door of his room. "Hey Oc, you awake yet?" She gets up in only a bra and pajama shorts and opens the door. "How are you feeling this morning?" He asks concerned. "Better" she replies calmly. "So what time does school start?" She adds. "I think 8:45. But um, are you sure you're up for that?" "Yeah of course. Can't miss my first day, can I?" "If you are 100% sure then that's fine but I don't mind staying home with you if you need." "That's sweet but seriously, I'm good." "Alright" He says.

The pogues are all getting ready when they hear John B yell "alright guys! We are leaving in 15!" Everyone rushes out to the van. John B is driving while Oc is looking at her class schedule. Kie looks over and says "oh you got English first. What a bore." She smiles at her and then Jj says "too bad you're a year younger.. we could've had classes together if you weren't." Oc looks at him and shrugs. She is super nervous since she has never really been to an actual school before.

Jj helps her find her locker and then ventures off to find his. She's trying to get it open but it's stuck. A random guy sees her struggling and says "hey, you need some help? Looks like it's stuck. Allow me." He pulls the locker open and says "there you go." "Thanks!" He then says "so are you new? I've never seen you around before." "Yeah, I just um, changed schools." "Oh alright that's cool." He then says "oh god how rude of me. My name is Spencer by the way, but by all means call me Spence." "Alright Spence, my name is Ocean but Oc for short." "Geez your parents were creative." "No um, actually my friends named me." Before he can reply, Jj walks up to them and says "Hey baby, you ready to go?" while looking straight into Spencer's eyes. She notices the tension and says awkwardly "um yeah... See you around Spence."

As Jj is walking her to her next class, he says "so who was that?" She replies, "no one in particular, just meeting new people." He gives her a quick kiss and she enters the classroom. She sits down in the middle row. The boy next to her then says "hey there mamas." She looks at him mortified and doesn't say a word. She thinks to herself "great first impression bud." When the class had first started, Oc was quite nervous, but as the class went on, she eased up. She understood everything that the teacher was explaining and she was actually very advanced, to her surprise. She was self taught and she expected it all to be much harder and for her to be behind. Miss Janet, her English teacher then said "alright class, we are going to have a quick pop quiz just to see where you all are. Keep in mind that this will not count as anything in your report cards." Oc does the test and goes through it very quickly. She finishes before the entire class and hands it in early.

The teacher was shocked and decided to check her answers to see if they were right. Every single question was right. Miss Janet was convinced that Oc had cheated, so she asked the girl to stay after class. "Oc, I am convinced that you have cheated on this quiz. I am going to have to ask you to come back during the lunch break to retake it." "But miss, I did not cheat. How would I have known what the test was even about? Or that there was even going to be a test to cheat on?" "I do not know how you did it, but please come back during lunch." Oc replies somewhat frustrated and says "I have 10 minutes before my next class. How about you ask me questions and I answer them out loud. No paper. No cheating." Miss Janet replies "okay."

With every question that her teacher had asked her, she answered perfectly and correctly. Miss Janet was amazed and said "okay then. I apologize for my accusations. Coming back at lunch will not be necessary." Oc smiled at her and went to her next class.

Throughout the rest of the day, she noticed that all the classes had the same beat. Do a pop quiz, finish early, get accused of cheating, answer out loud, then head to the next class. She was surprised with how little trust her teachers had in her.

At the end of the day, as she was walking out the school with the pogues, the announcer suddenly said "Ocean Routledge is needed in the Principles office, Ocean Routledge in the Principles office." All the pogues look at her confused and she shrugs. Jj walks her the the office while the others drive back to the Château. "What did you do?" He asks her. She replies "I don't know, you tell me" while entering Principle Louis's office. 

"Hello Ocean, take a seat." "You can call me Oc" she replies. Looking around the room, she sees all of her teachers. She then asks "Sir, may I know why I am here?" "Yes of course" he replies. He continues "you're teachers here have brought to my attention that you are very advanced in all of your classes. It would be useless for you to continue in theses classes if you arent learning anything." "I don't understand." She says. "Well I think it would be best if you got moved up to the 10th grade. Now you will be a year younger than all of your classmates, but I am aware that you're brother along with your friends are one year older, so I assume that it wont be a problem. Am I right?" "Yes sir. No problem here." He dismisses her and she runs out to Jj. "What happened?" He says concerned. She explains that they are moving her up to the 10th grade and the two walk home together, exited to tell the others.
