~Kyle's POV~
"She totally bought it."
I was walking down the hallway on Monday morning when I overhead a girl talking to her friend. I pretended to fiddle with the lock on my locker door as a cover to listen to them.
"I know, right? It's so funny. She really thinks we're friends with her," the other girl replied. I rolled my eyes. Sounded like typical teenage girl drama to me. Until I heard a very, very familiar name.
"Hannah has no clue what's coming for her," the first girl replied.
"It's gonna be so funny. Her poor little heart's gonna be broken," Girl Number Two laughed. Forget pretending to open my locker! I dropped the lock from my hands and it clattered against the door with a metallic clank. I leapt into the crowd of people in the halls, and raced to the gym for first period.
If I had any right ideas about what was about to happen, then I had to find Hannah.
~~~
"Hannah! Hannah! Oh my gosh, you won't be-lieve what I just heard," I sounded ridiculous as I tried to catch my breath, putting my hands on my knees as I was bent over, gasping for air. I had run the last few turns to get to the gym, where Hannah was feet away from entering the girls' locker room.
"What? What? Are you okay?" Hannah put her hand on my shoulder anxiously. I waved a hand, hoping it looked like I wasn't too concerned about myself.
"I'm fine. But listen, these two girls were talking in the hallway-"
"Two girls? Really Kyle, sit down for a second. You sound exhausted," Hannah insisted.
"I'm fine!" I raised my voice. A girl walking down the hallway towards us turned and walked in the direction she had come. Great, now some girls were coming to hurt my girlfriend and I was scaring innocent bystanders? Wonderful. Just wonderful.
"Listen," I said, and Hannah took her arm off my shoulder, dropping it to her side. "These two girls were talking in the hallway. They said that-"
"Hannah!" someone shouted from down the hall. I spun around, towards the voice, and saw exactly who I was dreading to meet again. It was one of the girls from the hallway earlier, and her friend was walking right by her side.
"Hi, Andrea!" Hannah waved. The girls took Hannah by both sides, and walked her into the locker room.
"Darling, let's talk," I heard Girl Number Two say as she closed the door behind the trio.
"Oh boy," I sighed, and walked by myself to the boys' locker room.
{after gym}
I heard someone crying in the bathroom after gym. I was worried about who I might find in there, and if anyone would spot me going into the girls' bathroom, but it was a chance I was willing to take. I had a feeling deep down that it was Hannah in there.
Before I entered, though, just in case, I asked, "Hello?"
"K-Kyle?" Yup, definitely Hannah.
"Hannah? Is there anyone else in there? I'm coming in," I announced, feeling brave. Hey, if Hannah was crying, I didn't care who saw me. I was going to go comfort her.
"No, Kyle. You don't have to. I'm coming out," Hannah replied, and a moment later, a stall door slammed, and she was standing in front of me.
"What happened?" I questioned, but I was afraid I already knew the answer.
"Andrea and Kaitlin- they..." Hannah paused for a moment to sniffle. "They told me they didn't want to be friends. They-" More sniffling. "They said I was a waste of their time and-" A small sob. "They were only using me to meet you."
"Meet me?" I asked in shock. "But they didn't even ever talk to me. Why would they just... give up?"
"They said I was a waste of time," she repeated. "I guess I wasn't doing a good job introducing them..."
"I'm sorry, Hannah," I replied, because I felt like now was an inappropriate time to say "I told you so."
"Thanks," Hannah whimpered, and I wrapped my arms around her in a tight hug. She buried her head in my chest and cried. If I could've made one promise right then, it would've been that Andrea and Kaitlin hadn't heard the last of me. Not yet.
