I couldn't stop thinking about what Eliza had said to me. Did she really think Li liked me back? I hadn't noticed the signs but things often flew over my head so that didn't mean anything. When I walked into the school on Monday, I saw the coach staring at me while leaning on the trophy case near the door. He motioned for me to come over and I felt my stomach flip inside my body cavity. I slowly stalled over to him and then stood awkwardly in front of him. I tapped my foot against the floor anxiously.
"I just wanted to apologize. Umm, sorry for threatening your spot on the team because of, uhh, your uhh, actually Ms. Johnson said I couldn't say lifestyle apparently it is rude but uhh for your way of life. So sorry." He grumbled and his eyes met everywhere but mine.
"I think way of life is the same as lifestyle, coach." I said and put my hands in my pockets.
"Then what do I say?" He spat out, still averting his eyes away from me.
"I don't know, sexuality?" I said and then stared at his eyes so he would notice me staring and look at me. He did.
"Anyways, the reason I actually wanted to talk to you is because I got some stats for our season this year and after looking at the score boards and stats, I realized we can't lose any more games or else we won't make the playoffs. Even if the other teams lose all their games here on out, we won't make it. Because we have lost 3 games and there are only three more season games and other teams locally have been doing either very good or very bad, so we still have a chance, but we also have a high chance of getting cut. We have to win the next games." He shrugged and then scratched his head.
"Okay, I will make sure that happens." Was all I said and then I left him standing there. I wasn't in the mood to hash it out with him. I knew I could get us to win. Even if Carlos and Cory sabotaged us, I could make a plan or play ahead of time that didn't involve us, so we could win.
...
After school when Arson dropped me off at my house Li was sitting on the porch on one of the lawn chairs I had forgotten to put away.
"What's that about?" Arson asked me.
"I don't know. How did he leave school so fast?" I said as I unbuckled my seat belt. I watched Arson wave and smile at him. I was feeling all jittery knowing I was about to talk to Li. I was nervous and excited. Even though there was no reason to be as he probably just wanted to hook up or something. Either way I would get to touch him and that still excited me.
"I think he has spare last today. Usually, we have lacrosse on Monday. For some reason you cancelled." Arson said, taking a dig at me. He had been angry all day at the cancellation.
"It is semi-cancelled tomorrow too so buckle up, bitch." I muttered back at him.
"Did you just call me a bitch?" He looked confused, as I usually didn't use that word.
"Felt appropriate there." I shrugged and grabbed my bag over the seat in the back. As I reached for the door, he put his arm out to stop me.
"Y'all hook up a lot. Does it not wear you out? Or umm, sorry to bring this up again but like, aren't you sore? Don't you want a break? I would not be able to hook up with a girl almost every day." Arson said and looked at me with concern. I rolled my eyes and reached for the door. He locked the door.
"Is that how it works with two guys?" He asked, clearly wanting a real answer.
"Okay we don't even hook up everyday most days. And you need to stop asking the sore question. Are you just asking me that 'cause you tryna know if I'm on top or bottom? Cause you keep bringing it up." I said and then stared deeply into his eyes.
