Even though Aaron and I had talked yesterday I thought he would at least lay off the paperwork.
But no.
I'm getting real sick and tired of not doing relevant things.
So that's where I find myself in front of his door, hesitating to knock. I keep raising my fist up then back to my side. So enough courage after a whole two minutes I knock and hear him respond for me to walk in.
"You need something?" He asks with his black glasses on not giving me a look.
"Yeah, I do" I keep my grip on the papers I have hugged to my body and sit in the chair in front of his desk. "I want real work" I let out and place the heavy papers on his desk.
Looking up from his desk and removing his glasses he raises an eyebrow. "So that's it?"
"Meaning I want real tasks" I say clearly for him to hopefully understand and stop acting dumb.
"Do you know why I gave you those irrelevant papers?" He asks leaning back in his chair seeming amused. I shake my head and he runs a hand through his hair. "I gave you those papers because I wanted to see how far you'll go to get something that might not be worth getting but you've seemed to complete the paperwork over the last week. And why is that?" He asks and I think hard for my answer.
"Because it's what I was told to do. I didn't want to let anyone down especially myself" I explain and he nods in content. "What's your point?"
"My point is that your hopefully wanting to move on as a firefighter, yes?" He asks and I nod. "And as a firefighter your called in for many things not knowing what the outcome might be but you'll do anything to those who are in need. Look, it could be cooking fires, small fires, or even massive ones and to talk about the papers that I gave you that were so insignificant you did them any way no matter how challenging it was...
There could be people within those fires you don't know; they could be your worst enemy but you will still save them because it's your job. You'll still do it because no matter what your doing it was something that made you proud and made someone grateful for what you've done for them".
"So this was a lesson?" I ask and he nods triumphantly. "Does that mean I can work on my firefighting position now?" I hope with glee.
"Not as yet. I see your potential but you'll still be working as my assistant. For now you can start taking calls for incidents and accidents that occur in our community. If you get a call about a fire I need you to report to me fast, or forward it to Alvarez. I don't need an 'I'm sorry I forgot' situation. They call, you come to me. Peoples lives are on the line" he says and I nod. "Understand?".
