The Veil

'Remus! Remus! Where's Sirius?' Sirius looked up from the form he was frowning over to the breathless Harry at the door. 'Teaching?' Remus suggested, but Harry shook his head. 'Fred and George said he left early, and I've just had this horrible vision and... oh Remus.' Harry was almost crying now, and Remus hurried over to him.

'Harry, what did you see?' Harry's eyes were wide and desperate, his entire face looking wild and pitying. 'Him. At the Ministry, with Voldemort torturing him.' Time seemed to stop for a moment, just for a moment, then Remus was thrown, hard, against the floor. 'We need to go.' He said, now. They ran into Ron and Hermione on the stairs, and, seeing Remus' face, immediately followed the pair without question. Ginny, Neville and Luna came tearing down to Remus, and when Hermione had carefully explained the situation they refused to stay at school.

At this point, Remus didn't care, he just had to get to Sirius. Everything was a complete blur, and then suddenly they were all standing in the Ministry of Magic, in the lift to the Department of Mysteries. 'Quietly.' Remus hissed. Harry was leading the way, charging along the corridor towards a black door. Remus was vaguely aware of the others running alongside, but his only focus was finding Sirius. 'SIRIUS!' Remus shouted, as loudly as he dared. Harry began yelling too, and then Remus' eyes were trained on a single spot. Row 97. 'SIRIUS!' Hermione shouted, running ahead a little. 'Remus!'

Remus spun, hearing Ginny's cry. Harry was holding a prophecy, watching the swirls. 'Well, well, well, what do we have here then?' Remus turned again, his heart practically thumping out of his chest. 'Malfoy.' He said disdainfully, clutching his wand a little tighter. 'Lupin,' Malfoy said, in the same tone of disgust, 'and may I ask what you're doing here?' From somewhere behind Lucius, someone let out a loud cackle, a cackle Remus would know anywhere. 'He's come to save his little blood-traiting husband.' Bellatrix, mocked, coming into full view. Remus edged his wand towards her face, the tip almost touching her nose. 'Bellatrix Lestrange.' Neville gaped. Remus knew why, he knew who that foul woman was. 'Neville Longbottom is it? How's Mum and Dad?' Remus took in a sharp breath, stupefy on the very tip of his tongue. 'Better now they're about to be avenged.' Remus seized Neville by the armpit and threw his backwards, preventing him from cursing Lestrange. 'Now, let's all just calm down then, shall we.' Malfoy said, extending a hand in front of Lestrange. 'Get the fuck out of my way.' Remus growled, taking another step closer to the two Death Eaters. 'Give me the prophecy now, and I will.' Malfoy said, and Remus saw him grip his own wand. 'Harry! No!' Remus practically screamed, as Harry offered up the prophecy. Remus knocked Harry's hand back, and Hermione caught the orb. 'Know what I can do with it, then Lupin?' Remus just scowled. He tried his luck pushing past Malfoy, but with one flick of rip-off Barbie's wand Remus was glued to the floor. 'Use your manners, Lupin.' Remus let out a low growl of frustration, trying to unstick his feet. 'And what if I don't?' He taunted, 'NOW!'

'STUPEFY!' Death Eaters flew in every direction, and Hermione unstuck Remus. 'GO! GET OUT!' Remus yelled. Neville, Ginny and Luna had run the opposite way, so Remus latched himself onto Harry, Ron and Hermione, just praying they were ok. The Death Eaters clearly weren't leaving without a good fight, and kept appearing wherever they ran. 'FUCK - OFF!' Remus screeched, petrifying Amycus Carrow. Hermione screamed as they ran full on into Ginny, Neville and Luna, but Remus was relieved. They were all alive. Another Death Eater came flying onwards, and Remus did nothing. He was concentrating on trying to get everyone moving to the door. 'REDUCTO.' Ginny screeched. Prophecies, prophecies falling. 'RUN! HEAD FOR THE DOOR.' Remus slotted himself in last, that way he could make sure everyone was out. The door was no longer on the floor. Remus squeezed his eyes shut as he prepared to hit the floor. But he never did. Thank god for Hermione. 'The voices, can you hear them?' Harry said suddenly, gazing at the archway, the archway that was whispering. 'There are no voices, Harry.' Hermione said, looking at Harry anxiously. 'No, there are.' Remus almost whispered it as he stepped forwards to examine the arch. 'Everyone behind me!' Harry said, but Remus stood in front of him. 'Remus.' Remus was handed the prophecy. Then black. Everything went dark, like someone had simply turned off every light. People were screaming, and struggling, then it was just Remus, lying on the floor by himself. He hauled himself up, then jolted in fear.

'Give me the prophecy, or I shall kill each and every one of these vile children.' Lucius Malfoy. Obviously. Remus glared around at the kids, each loudly begging him to say no, but really silently begging him to pass over the prophecy. 'Catch.' Remus smirked, throwing the prophecy up in the air. The Death Eaters were all distracted. 'STUPEFY, STUPEFY, STUPEFY! FUCK! STUPEFY! STUPEFY! STUPEFY! Then it was just Lucius. Lucius by himself. Remus had all the kids behind him.

'MAD EYE!' Remus yelled, almost crying in relief. 'TONKS!' Then his stomach dropped as someone yelled his name, someone far too familiar. 'REMUS!' Remus turned, his stomach doing somersaults. 'SIRIUS!' Malfoy looked terrified, he was surrounded by so many enemies. Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop. Pop. No one in the Order smelt that strongly of Dark Magic. 'FUCK!' Sirius shouted. The last thing Remus saw before he was knocked out was Sirius punching Malfoy.

'GET UP!' Tonks was shouting, kicking Remus hard in the shin. Remus did. He sprung up, his wand already in hand. A red jet of light flew from Lestrange's wand, and Remus ran forward. He ran for his world. But Sirius was already flying backwards, already disappearing. Only his legs left. 'PADFOOT!' Remus shouted, as loud as he could, 'NO!' Remus caught Sirius' shoes, pulling them back to him. He found a give, and he thought he could do it, but no.

Remus' hand came back with a single shoe clenched beneath the fingers.
