"You have to be perfect. Remember that Y/N."Her dull green eyes looked at her hands on her lap as the woman sitting infront of her spoke. Her voice like a far-away whisper. It was fading in and out.
"You must do your duty as my daughter." The woman spoke, her voice harsh and holding an accusing tone.
Y/N blankly nodded, her fingers playing with the hems of her sleeves. The pain of the strikes still fresh upon her skin.
A glance up at her mother, had her thinking.
Would she care if she knew?
"You mustn't disappoint me."
She wouldn't.
She wouldn't care.
"Is something bothering you?"
Y/N stopped, her hand on the stairway railing. She looked down at the man standing at the foot of the stairs.
"What do you mean?" Her voice no longer held the joy it had.
"You seem distant. You barely eat, barely speak to anyone."
She wanted to laugh, yet all her senses were numb.
"I'm fine."
"Hey, you can talk to us. Talk to me." He said, a strange desperation in his voice.
"If I didn't know better I'd say you cared, father."
He flinched back at her cold, blank tone. Seeing those dark, dull green eyes he tried to remember the brightness they once held.
"I'm your father. Of course I care." He spoke, softly as if fear of scaring her.
"You're too late to fulfill that role." She said and walked away.
Her father, whom she used to follow around as a child, smiling and giggling could only remember the girl she once was.
