Chapter 28 - Wilbur's Lament

"Turn back!" Reyna yelled. The Roman onagers... no, we can't go there. We'll get shot down immediately. She doesn't usually give orders to the immortal flying horse Pegasus, but today is an exception.

"What are those?" Bad questioned.

Reyna shuddered. "Siege weapons. If we get any closer, they'll shoot us out of the sky."

"From this high up?" The Coach exclaimed. "That's some powerful weapons! I say we go down there and smash in these cupcakes' heads."

"I... don't think that's a good idea." Nico stated, looking at the Roman onagers and well-armed Romans. He pointed at the shore. "There. Greeks control the sea."

Reyna wasn't sure if the Greeks will be friendlier than the Romans, but Pegasus seemed to like that idea.

Then they saw a black motor boat coming their way. A laurel wreath design with the letters SPQR was glinting on the boat's prow. Reyna's hand went to her sword.

"I thought the Romans didn't have a navy." Nico said.

Reyna's expression darkened. "We don't. Looks like Octavian has been busier than I've realized."

"Then we attack!" Coach Hedge said. "Cause no one's standing in my way when I'm this close."

Reyna shook her head. "No, we'll try to parlay. He's a good legionnaire. We may be able to reason with him. Be careful, though. If we fail... he's not easy to fight."

(Line Break)

"Tyson, you can take the coach there, correct?" Reyna asked for confirmation. Tyson had saved them from Micheal. Dakota and Leila are now helping them, too.

After everyone had a role, Reyna and Bad stayed behind. Reyna prayed to her mother, but...

A huge arrow almost got Blackjack, but BBH slowed it down with his shadows, allowing the pegasus to escape.

Reyna faced Orion, the attacker. With blessing from both Athena and Bellona, she defeated the giant. Her cloak is now also impenetrable. Bad didn't step in. He knew that this is not his fight. This is a fate destined for Reyna.

"You should go with me together." Reyna insisted.

Bad shook his head. "I'm a 'monster' as they call my kind. They won't welcome me. You should deliver the statue yourself."

"And I'm a Roman." Reyna smiled. "Come on."

(Line Break)

"GREEK DEMIGODS!" Reyna's voice boomed as the forty foot tall statue came to a landing. "Behold your most sacred statue, the Athena Parthenos, wrongly taken by the Romans. I return it to you now as a gesture of peace!"

The statue settled on the crest of the hill, about twenty feet away from Thalia's pine tree. Instantly golden light rippled a crossed the ground and settled through everyone.

"Romans!" Reyna yelled. "I do this for the good of the legion, for the good of Rome. We must stand together with our Greek brethren!"

Nico stepped forward. "Listen to her!"

Then, a voice rang in their heads.

YOU WILL DIE.
