Em's POV:

As the plane hit the runway at London Heathrow I sighed quietly to myself. I had spent the long journey home with my headphones in, blocking out the world and my thoughts. I didn't know what was going through Niall's head but he must be confused. I had made him sleep in his own room last night and had ignored him and the other boys ever since. But I couldn't find it in me to pretend like everything was fine so instead I was ignoring the sad look in his eyes and telling myself this was for the best.

Once the plane had stopped I stood and picked up my hand luggage. I followed the boys out of the plane, Niall falling into step beside me as we walked across the tarmac. He didn't say anything, knowing that he wouldn't get an answer anyway, but I had to admire his perseverance. It was the same perseverance he had shown all those times at the start of tour when he would see straight through my attitude and keep talking to me or come and sit by me. It was one of the many things I had grown to love about him and that thought tugged at my heart even more.

We entered the airport and collected our luggage from the conveyor belt. Harry piled mine and his bags onto a trolley to take out to the car.

"Ready boys? The fans are up ahead," Liam said with a nod forward, looking down at his phone which must be showing a text from security informing him of the fans. I groaned quietly but walked with the boys towards the screams. As we walked past, I made sure to not look too moody in case these pictures made it online. However, as soon as we were out of sight I let my face fall back into the downcast expression I had been wearing for the last few days. Now in a quiet part of the airport, Zayn turned to us all.

"Well boys, it's been a pleasure," he grinned. The boys all laughed and started hugging each other and saying goodbye.

"How long have we got off?" Louis asked.

"A month, we're off to Europe on the 22nd September," Harry grinned.

"Can't wait lads, I love you!" Zayn cheered as he headed off to the exit. The boys all waved goodbye and I heard someone clear their throat behind me. I turned to Niall who sent me a small smile but I noticed the glassy look in his eyes.

"Have fun at your Dad's," he said softly. "And let me know when you get back to your Mum's safely. I'll call you, maybe we can organise something, see each other before you go to uni?" He offered.

I looked at his face and heard the eagerness in his words, saw the hope in his eyes. But I also heard the 'maybe', that single word ringing around my head. I knew that everyone always leaves eventually, I had been stupid to think that this would be any different. So despite my heart shattering into what felt like a million pieces, I looked into Niall's eyes and did what I knew I had to do.

"I don't think you should call me," I whispered. Niall's smile dropped and he frowned.

"What?"

"This isn't going to work, we're just kidding ourselves. You have a busy life and I have a degree to study for. So I'm doing you a favour. Don't bother calling," I said firmly, knowing there was no going back now. A tear rolled down Niall's cheek as he stared motionless at me.

"Em," Niall whispered, his voice cracking as more tears fell. Not being able to bare watching this, I turned and headed for the exit.

"Em!" I heard Harry shout but I took off running and didn't stop until I was at his car. I leant back against it and finally let my tears fall. Sobs wracked through my body as I looked up at the grey sky, the stormy looking clouds matching my heart. I heard footsteps come running and the sound of wheels on the ground. I wiped at my eyes and looked towards the sound, seeing Harry charging towards the car with our luggage trolley.
