Em's POV:
The next two weeks went by in a whirl of final lectures, a Christmas pyjama netball social, and a flat Christmas dinner. Dad had come to visit last weekend and we had exchanged Christmas presents. It had been really nice to see him again and I made a silent vow to myself that now I live closer to him I need to make more effort to spend time with him. Before I knew it my assignments for the semester were all handed in and my car was packed with everything I would need over Christmas break.
"I'm gonna miss you guys!" I pouted at the three people in front of me who had quickly become my best friends. Josh laughed and tackled me into a hug, picking me up and spinning us around in the car park.
"It's only a few weeks then we'll all be back causing trouble!" He cheered. The four of us laughed and I hugged Max goodbye too.
"Let me know what Niall thinks of his present!" Maddie squealed as she pulled me into a tight hug. I caught sight of the gift on the back seat of my car and smiled to myself, internally praying that he would like it.
"I will, I'll call you anyway over the holidays. It's gonna be so weird not chatting in our little rooms for half the night," I chuckled, thinking of how me and Maddie often got carried away gossiping and lost track of time.
"I'm just a phone call away girl," Maddie grinned. She released me from our hug and I smiled at my friends as I climbed into my car.
"See you in January!" I called out the window as I started the engine. Maddie, Max and Josh stood in the car park and waved as I pulled away. I put a Christmas album on to keep up my festive mood and soon found myself singing along to the tracks as I headed home.
I was anxiously awaiting my arrival, not ecstatic about spending time with Sam but I knew I had no choice. I had been hoping to go to London for a few days first but my deadlines had taken over my life and the boys' album came out two days ago so they've been swamped with that, meaning me and Niall just haven't found the time to organise anything. I was hoping that once I was home I could call him and sort something out. We had four days until Christmas and I needed to give him his present.
My only relief regarding putting up with Sam is that Harry is coming home tomorrow for a couple of weeks so I only have to go a night fighting for myself. Even though I know Harry won't necessarily take my side, I know he'll be able to calm me down and talk some sense into me so I don't lash out at Sam and ruin Christmas. My thought of throwing brussels sprouts at Sam's forehead sprung to mind and I found myself giggling as I pulled onto the motorway. The look on my mum's face would be priceless. You can't, best behaviour this holiday. I rolled my eyes at myself, best behaviour is so boring. But I knew my head was right, I couldn't cause a scene because even if I did Sam wouldn't leave. I sighed to myself as I sped along and tried to think of polite ways to behave before I arrived back home.
I dragged my suitcase to the front door and I was just about to slot my key into the lock when the door flew open and my mum's beaming face was looking at me.
"Em you made it!" She grinned, hugging me tight. I rolled my eyes over her shoulder but returned her hug. "I was waiting for you to text to say you were leaving Cambridge," Mum said as she pulled away. I refrained from rolling my eyes once again at her slight nag and instead shrugged.
"Sorry forgot," I said. I pulled my suitcase into the hall and Mum helped me bring in everything from the car. I managed to get Niall's present in without her seeing it, not in the mood for her questioning and smothering. Just seeing Sam's car in the driveway and his shoes on the rack by the front door put me on edge. Before he could make an appearance I distracted myself by taking my things up to my room. As I trudged back downstairs I heard an all too familiar meow and I grinned as Benjy came trotting into the hallway from the kitchen.
