Harry's POV:

I knocked three times on the door in front of me while balancing the two pizza boxes and a four-pack of beer in my arms. After a while the door slowly swung open to reveal my best friend, looking like he had been to hell and back. But I suppose he had. Niall's eyes were puffy and red and his cheeks were tear-stained. He had bags under his eyes and his hair looked like it really needed a wash. It had been three days since we had arrived home and Em had dropped her bombshell onto Niall and it was safe to say he wasn't taking it well. He was going to Ireland in a few days to see his family but until then I decided I would try and cheer him up.

"Hey buddy," I said softly with a smile. "Hungry?" I held up the pizza boxes. Niall tried for a smile and stepped to the side to let me in. I looked round his apartment in alarm. The place was a mess, dirty dishes were stacked on every surface, there was a vase smashed in a corner and sheet music was strewn all over the place. Niall started shuffling together the papers and I saw him blush at the state of his place.

"Don't worry about it," I told him. "You've been writing?" I asked, trying to steer the conversation back to normal territory.

"Was trying to put how I feel into a song, thought it might help but I can't get it right," Niall shrugged as he fell down onto the sofa. "Doesn't feel right to be writing a break up song about her," he said with a short humourless laugh.

"Why don't you play me what you've got? You must have something there?" I encouraged as I nodded at the stack of sheet music. I knew Niall, playing music was one thing that relaxed his mind and calmed him down if he was ever angry or upset. He shrugged but stood and walked over to his guitars. He picked one up and took a seat on his piano stool.

"It's only a verse and chorus," he mumbled before starting to pluck at the guitar strings. I gave him my undivided attention as he began to play. When he started to sing I had to swallow the lump in my throat at the emotion in his voice.

"Once in a lifetime, it's just right. We make no mistakes. Not even a landslide or riptide, could take it all away." I watched as Niall looked down at his guitar, a slight blush appearing on his cheeks the way it always does when he sings something new of his to anyone. "When I close my eyes, all the stars align. And you are by my side. You are by my side," Niall sung, closing his eyes. His song was heartbreakingly beautiful. "Once in a lifetime, you were mine." He finished and strummed the final chord before shrugging and looking down at his hands. "Nothing much, bit shit really," he mumbled.

"Niall that's brilliant," I breathed. "Really good, honest. We could work on that and put it on the next album," I encouraged. Niall ran a hand through his hair and chuckled drily.

"Honestly Harry? I don't think I'd be able to sing that on stage every night if we were to go on tour," he admitted.

"Well think about it. We could always make it a deluxe track rather than a single. That way it won't become such an in-your-face famous song," I chuckled. Niall smiled slightly and nodded slowly.

"Maybe. I have got a song for the album though, if you wanna hear it? I was playing it for Em actually, back when we were in South America," he chuckled. "Been finishing it the last few weeks." I nodded eagerly, leaning on my elbows to listen. The song was perfect, an idea for a music video already forming in my head. I stood and applauded Niall when he finished it, causing him to blush bright red and chuckle.

"That has to be one of our singles! Has it got a name?"

"I don't know really, I was thinking something like Night Changes but if you have a better idea then that's fine," Niall shrugged as he put his guitar back. I shook my head and passed him his pizza and a beer as he sat back down on the sofa.
